İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Küresel Siyasal Eğilimler Birimi (GPoT) ve Marmara Üniversitesi Uluslararası İlişkiler Araştırma ve Uygulama Merkezi (MURCIR) iş birliğinde düzenlenen "Türkiye'de Bölge Çalışmaları Çalıştayı", İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Ataköy Yerleşkesinde gerçekleşti. Bu çerçevede, "Bölge Çalışmaları ve Kuramsal Perspektifler", "Küresel Güçler ve Bölge Çalışmaları" ile "Bölge Çalışmaları ve Türkiye" konulu paneller düzenlendi.

Yasin Kucukkaya, a Syria expert from the Global Political Trends Center think tank in Istanbul, said Turkey preferred an “unarmed diplomacy” with the US for a certain time in northern Syria.

“I think all relevant parties, including the Syrian Democratic Forces which include the YPG, were satisfied by the outcome of the negotiations between American and Turkish delegations, because any unilateral move of Turkey would bring damage on the ground,” he told Arab News.

Mensur Akgun, a professor of international relations at Istanbul Kultur University and director of the Global Political Trends Center think tank, called it legitimate for Turkey to express fears over the YPG near its border.

“For any country… this would be a serious security concern,” he told The Media Line.

Akgun believes that Ankara is willing to go into Syria on its own if it cannot come to an agreement with the US, but that it prefers to avoid that option.

Internship Programme

GPoT provides the opportunity for outstanding university students from various academical backgrounds to benefit from a 1-3 months long internship at the Center. The programme is open to both Turkish as well as international students. However, priority will be given to students enrolled at Istanbul Kültür University (IKU). Applications are being collected throughout the year.

A direct confrontation by Ankara would “would serve neither Turkey’s national interests nor be a solution to the problem”, according to Mensur Akgun, chair of the department of international relations at Istanbul Kultur University. He predicted that the outcome would be “a kind of political settlement — a compromise formula that will satisfy the Saudis as well”.

Mensur Akgun, a professor of international relations at Kultur University, said that the mild reaction to the incident coming from Trump was not unexpected. "Trump's track record, performance and relations with Saudi Arabia suggest that Washington is likely to merely use the Khashoggi case as a tool to get concessions from Riyadh in areas such as arms deals or convince them to pursue US policies."
