Turkish and Chinese Scientists under the Coordination of Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Toran Examine Parent-Child Relationship in the COVID-19 Process

Under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Toran, one of the faculty members of Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Faculty of Education, a research was carried out on the experiences of Turkish and Chinese parents, who took part in the professional business life in the COVID-19 quarantine process, with their children at home.

In the research, it turned out that parents want to put their children in the center of their lives after the epidemic.

In Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Toran’s statement to AA reporter, the research scope from Turkey 13 (7 mothers, six fathers), and from China 11 volunteers (8 mothers, three fathers) reported that a total of 24 parent about two weeks of online interviews including.

Prof. Dr. Toran said that the parents of the two countries had many common attitudes and behaviours in their relations with their children.

Some Parents Learned to Play with Their Children

Explaining that both Turkish and Chinese parents stated that they lived in the same house with their children for the first time for a long time, our teacher said, “As a positive effect of this process, both Turkish and Chinese parents started to get to know their children again and developed skills for how to take care of their children. Some parents, who learned to play with their children, had a tendency from parent-child relationship to peer relationship in this process. ” said.

Looking at the negative changes in the relationship of parents with their children, Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Toran noted that this process is quite tiring for parents and parents have serious disciplinary problems with their children.

Toran stated that the parents of the two countries, who complained that they could not meet their children's expectations and the desire for constant attention together with the epidemic anxiety, also felt that they were inadequate in the role of parenting.

They realized that their children were not at the center of their lives

Stating that the prominent finding of the research is the behaviors observed by the parents in children, Assoc. Prof. Toran said:

“It was determined that both Turkish and Chinese children were bored with being at home during the quarantine process, became angry, worried about the epidemic, became overly dependent on their parents and could not focus on activities at home.

However, it was seen that the children wanted to spend time in front of television and tablets and parents allowed this to manage this process. In addition, it can be said that the daily routine of the child changes completely during the quarantine process, changes occur in sleep-feeding and other hours, which may have a negative effect on the parent-child relationship.

One of the interesting findings of the research is that both Turkish and Chinese parents want to spend more time with their children after quarantine. Realizing that their children were not at the center of their lives in the pre-quarantine period, the parents stated that they wanted to take their children to the center of their lives after quarantine. ”

Our teacher stated that the final results of the research will be shared with the public after all the data are analyzed in detail.

The Second Invisible Outbreak in Corona Days: "Violence against Women and Girls!"

As it is known, while fighting and crisis with COVID-19 pandemic, four billion people in the world are closed to their homes as a precaution. This situation brings with it an increasingly invisible epidemic, a fatal danger. Such critical periods not only increase the violence, women's murders, harassment, rape, but also make them invisible and invisible.

The United Nations (UN WOMEN) reports that violence against women and girls has increased in many countries as the pandemic continues, reporting that they have received an increasing number of calls for help with the domestic violence hotline and shelter demand. For example; In Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, the UK and the United States, government officials, women's rights activists and non-governmental organizations report that domestic violence and the demand for help for emergency shelter increased during the crisis. On the same issue, it reports that it has increased more than 30% in searches for helplines in Singapore and Cyprus.

During the epidemic, where the movement is restricted, there are few people everywhere and the protection systems are weakened, violence against women and girls increases. Along with home and quarantine, the tension caused by security, health and financial concerns increases. It is known by everyone that it is not possible to control violent behaviour behind closed doors in the home. In addition, the restriction on staying at home increases the social isolation of women who have been subjected to violence from their spouses, and these further drives women away from people and resources that can help them.

Violence against women in the world was already evident as one of the biggest human rights violations even before the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past 12 months, 243 million women and girls aged 15-49 have been exposed to sexual or physical violence from their spouses or men they live with.

It was known that it was problematic to detect and report violence against women in the pre-epidemic period, only less than 40% of women who were subjected to seek or report help, and only 10% of women called the police for help. In the current pandemic conditions, problems in these areas, including restrictions on the access of women and girls to telephone and emergency hotlines and disruption of public services such as law enforcement, justice and social services, further increase these negative situations. These disruptions can also endanger those who have been subjected to sexual assault (rape) to receive health care and receive the care and support they need, such as mental health and psycho-social support. Moreover, these disruptions also encourage the perpetrators to remain unpunished in such crimes.

In pandemic conditions, the situation of refugee women who are forced to live in other countries far from their lands due to wars and conflicts is also of special importance. It is known that most of the refugee women do not even have a house where they can live in hygienic conditions; or even have housing problems. Refugee women living in difficult and unsanitary conditions in camps, tents, slums do not even have access to the most basic personal protective measures such as clean water, soap and masks, and even enough food. They are more likely to be subjected to violence by their spouses and people they never knew during the stay. Due to language problems and xenophobia, it is known that they cannot get the necessary service from security, judicial and health institutions for fear of expulsion when they report their violent spouses. In this context, special studies should be conducted for refugee women so that they can also benefit from these services, and information about the places they can apply in their own language should be shared. If necessary, translators should be provided with access to services and information for women and girls.

Violence and murders against women, which continue increasingly during this pandemic, are not uncommon events and individual problems. Governments should take measures to protect and support the rights of women and children in order to prevent this systematic cycle of violence that continues. Access to hotlines, relief services and shelters should be facilitated for women who have been subjected to violence from their spouses under the conditions of “stay at home” and quarantine, where social support and law enforcement intervention is reduced. For this reason, hotlines and other services for violence against women should be considered as the most “basic services” and should be kept open, and law enforcement officers should be sensitive to respond to victims' calls.

For all these reasons; The United Nations calls on all governments to see what will be done to prevent violence against women and girls as an important part of these packages while creating national combat packages with the COVID-19 pandemic.

It states that each country should set aside special budgets and broad efforts to increase the number and capacity of shelters for women and girls affected by violence, to establish emergency hotlines and to raise awareness about them. It is important to expand social support for those who suffer violence, and to strengthen the provision of helplines, psycho-social support and counselling by using new technology-based solutions to reach women who do not have access to phones or the internet. Law enforcement and Justice Services must take action to ensure that incidents of violence against women and girls and their perpetrators are given priority without impunity.

Some countries have come up with creative solutions. For example, in Spain and France, they are campaigning for the Prevention of violence against women through pharmacies because women cannot call helplines because they are in the same house as the violent person in epidemic conditions. When the woman goes to the pharmacy and asks for “Mask 19,” the pharmacist calls the helpline directly. The UK has launched the “silent touch” application for migrant women. France has opened advisory desks for women in supermarkets and set aside a special budget for setting up places where violent women can stay during the crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic puts the whole world through a test we've never had before. The goal for humanity now must be not only to survive and survive COVID-19, but to emerge from this process refreshed and enhanced by preventing violence against women that has emerged as the dark and unseen face of this pandemic and seeing the woman at the center of development as a force.
