Istanbul Kültür University (İKÜ) organized as online the May 19th Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day celebrations due to the COVID-19 outbreak, with the participation of our Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver and our Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel. The event was held on Tuesday, May 19 at 15.00 on the Adobe Connect Virtual Classroom Application; First, the National Anthem, and then Atatürk's Address to Youth was read by our student clubs.

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel, who delivered the opening speech of the program: “Today is the 101st anniversary of our national independence initiated by liberty-dedicated lives. May 19, which is the symbol of the fighting spirit initiated by Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Samsun, is also a life lesson. “My Dear Kültür Family

As a university, we are almost approaching our 25th year. I do not remember another time frame in our history that we have been separated from our campuses for such a long time. We have left 8 weeks behind. This is an incredibly instructive experience for each of us. We add new keywords and different dates to the agenda of our mind.

 According to our academic calendar updated with the pandemic, 15 May 2020 was the date when we completed the courses in the spring semester.  Now, I look back and see how much we can fit into this calendar together. Of course, there were specific times that we were stumped,  had disagreements, the points we got stuck. We have received  both criticism and appreciation. However, in times of crisis, every detail is experienced with a little sharper both during the decision and the implementation phase. At this point, we tried to do the best for the conditions of the day for our students and workers, by sticking to our purpose. With the principle of sustainability in education in times of crisis, we have overcome this process together. All the experiences we have acquired; each of them is a title that will pass into our corporate memory. According to the calendar of the pandemic, "now" has passed. Our next job is to build the ecosystem of the new normal.

I recently read an interview with Writer-Historian-Academician Yuval Noah Harari. In his interview, he stated that humanity has enough scientific infrastructure and technological tools to overcome this virus and that the biggest problem in this regard is not viruses but human hatred, greed and ignorance. I shared this highly thought-provoking argument in our meetings. I think they are education and work ethics as the antidote of these problems pointed out by Harari. We can contribute to the improvement of this process through transparent communication, loyalty to the purpose, flexibility, creative solutions, mutual understanding and solidarity.

My Dear Kültür Family,

Within the scope of stretching the pandemic measures, there are many questions regarding the order of our work. I would like to share with you that in this process, where the statements coming from the official authorities will be decisive and our decisions are made according to the conditions of the day; the final information about our working system will continue to be announced from our university's Kovid Committee KOVKOM.

We are slowly approaching June. The summer months are the periods in which three activities (summer school, graduation and preference days) that are always very important for our university are planned and coordinated. However, like all our events, the pandemic also influenced the scenarios of graduation, summer school and preference days. We have discussed the 2020 Graduation with alternative plans and simulations, but an application in the past years seems unlikely at this stage. We continue to examine examples and applications in the world about digital graduation. I would like to state that we are always open to listening and evaluating creative solutions from the academic-administrative staff of our university regarding graduation, which has a special importance for both students and their families.

Another topic related to the summer months is applicant communication. According to the academic calendar, the spring semester will officially end on June 24, 2020. YKS will be held on June 27 - 28, 2020. This is a critical date for candidate communication. It is a well-known fact that we will have a difficult year both economically and socially. At this point, the synergy of our academic and administrative staff is more important than ever before in applicant communication. In this title, we work with our alternative scenarios with the Rector's Office, General Secretariat and Corporate Communication Directorate. I wholeheartedly believe that we will achieve the 2020 preference days in the best way, without sacrificing health and safety. We will coordinate these two critical dates, which correspond to the recovery phase and our new normal phase, with technology, agile approach, transparent communication network, purposefulness, flexible thought and operation management. At this point, we need mutual understanding, trust and a high level of synergy.

Another agenda item of our university is Summer School. It is very important to transfer the knowledge and experience gained in distance education to the Summer School in the best way. All details regarding the Summer School process will be shared with you by our Rectorate.

Next Tuesday is May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. Those under 20 years of age, some of which are our students and candidates, whose freedom is restricted by the pandemic, perhaps give one of the most challenging exams of their lives. As the Great Leader Atatürk stated in his aphorism, all our hope is in youth. So let's celebrate May 19 in a special way. Let's leave bureaucracy, titles, hierarchy aside and try to make the youth feel that we are with them and will always be. Maybe with a message, maybe with a phone call. The positive effects of sleep on the immune system have become more important nowadays when we are struggling with the epidemic of the new Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). The cells of the immune system have the ability to reproduce, renew and heal during sleep. The best time to renew these cells is night sleep. Getting enough sleep will have enough resistance to protect against many microorganisms, including COVID-19. It also helps fight melatonin, free radicals and toxins secreted during sleep. If you do not sleep enough, your immune system may weaken as cells cannot regenerate, which can invite diseases. Therefore, it is important to take care to have a good night's sleep during these days when the epidemic of COVID-19 is on the agenda. Sleep hygiene is defined as principles and practices that improve sleep quality. Below are suggestions for sleep hygiene.

Watching TV in bed, dealing with tablets, computers and mobile phones make it harder for you to fall asleep by suppressing the hormone melatonin.

Even if you spend more than 20 minutes in bed at night, do not try to force yourself. Get out of bed and deal with an activity that doesn't stimulate your mind much in a quiet room, and then go back to bed when you're sleepy.

The human brain is programmed for sleep at night and vigilance during the day. Therefore, it is very important to avoid daytime sleep (including short-term naps) in order to sleep well at night.

Exercise is useful for good sleep. However, it should not be done close to sleep. Stop exercising 4-5 hours before bedtime.

Do not enter the bed too hungry or too full. Make sure the evening meals are not heavy. Leave your dinner 4 hours before bedtime and 2 hours before your snacks.

Stop drinking tea, coffee, and other drinks containing caffeine from the afternoon. Also, avoid smoking and alcohol use as much as possible.

Istanbul Kültür University Vocational School organized an e-seminar titled “Futures and Options Market” on Friday, May 15, 2020. Attending the event as a speaker, Meksa Investment Securities VIOP Deputy General Manager Ergün Tekgül gave detailed information to our students. Explaining the short history of the stock market and derivative markets in the world and Turkey, the general structure of the futures and options market, the place of algorithms and algorithmic robots in the capital market and the basics of behavioral finance, Tekgül answered the questions of our students. With the event, our students increased their awareness of VIOP.

Istanbul Kültür University Vocational School organized an e-seminar titled “Changing Tourism Dynamics and Experience-Oriented Personalized Tourism Alternatives” on Monday, May 11. In the event, where the head of the board of Prontotour Ali Onaran Uzun was the speaker, detailed information was shared on alternative tourism types and personal holiday plans. The event ended after our students' questions were answered.

Bakırköy City Council Disabled Assembly, within the scope of the "10-16 May Disabled Week",offered to program to our instructor from Communication Design Department Ömür Kınay by giving their Instagram account of which one day use. Upon this, Kınay organized a live broadcast on 15 May Friday at 15.00 with IKU Sign Language Choir Conductor & Instructor Gökben Keleş and her students. Ömür Kınay, who took the role of moderator in the event organized in cooperation with Kültür Point, hosted the trainer Gökben Keleş in the first stage of the program. Keleş's story, coaching, sign language training and volunteering were discussed.

Following the program, Ceren Naz Akbulut and İrem Opan, who were connected to the live broadcast respectively, performed magnificent solo performances with Sign Language. In the event, the proposal from the audiences of Bakırköy City Council and Bakırköy Municipality to work together was brought.

The last application to the “Cinema of the Future” competition, which was held in cooperation with TÜRSAK Foundation and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism General Directorate of Cinema, which has been supporting cinema students for the short film projects for 17 years, ended on March 9, 2020.  Head of Radio, Television and Cinema Department Assist. Prof. Perihan Taş Öz took part as the pre-jury member of the “Cinema of the Future” competition in which the department of media and cinema students (undergraduate-graduate- master’s degree and PhD) of universities in Turkey and TRNC applied.

On Thursday, May 14, Project Manager of ÖZYAZICI İnşaat Zafer Yeşilmurat and Civil Engineer Aslı Karabal were the guests of the “MIM0201 Project Management” course given by İnstructor Tülin Barutçular.

Yeşilmurat who showed examples of the projects they completed in Istanbul, also gave information about the construction phases and the operation of the construction site, and emphasized the importance of occupational safety and worker health. Yeşilmurat informed the students with photographs and short films about the urban transformation project and project management that are currently under construction in Üsküdar.

The Molecular Biology and Genetics Department organized an e-seminar titled "Biotechnological Applications of Exopolysaccharides Obtained from Probiotic Bacteria" on Thursday, May 14. In the event that Prof. Dr. Belma Aslim from Gazi University Faculty of Science Biology Department was the speaker; as a result of the researches on the biotechnological applications of probiotic bacteria, scientific findings were discussed that the diseases that occur in cancer, parkinson or gastrointestinal systems play an effective role in the treatment processes.

Kültür Point organized a training titled “Internet Addiction” on Friday, May 15. In the training given by Uşak Training and Research Hospital Training Nurse and Head Nurse Esin Erdem; the concept of addiction, internet usage stages, healthy internet usage and ways to get rid of addiction were mentioned. In the training, in which the questionnaires were directed to responders, an interactive program was carried out with the studies on internet use with six-hat thinking method.

Molecular Biology and Genetics Club organized an e-seminar titled "I graduated, then what?" on May 15, 2020. Elif Kansız, Hatice Gülseroğlu, Berna Somuncu and Begüm Gökçe, who graduated from Istanbul Kültür University, and Dilek Turan, who did internships at İKU MOBİGEN laboratories, participated the event as speakers. Elif Kansız's “I graduated, then what?”, Hatice Gülseroğlu's “Use of Natural Sciences in Contemporary Art-Bioart”, Berna Somuncu's “You are the Limit!”, Begüm Gökçe's “Microfluidic Platforms-Lab-on-a chip ”and Dilek Turan's “ Cellular Treatments ” presentations contributed to the career development processes of MOBIGEN students.

Kültür Point organized a webinar titled “Volunteering for Global Purposes Before It's Too Late” on Saturday, May 16, 2020. In the event where Yunus Emre Benli, the founder of Volunteering Stories and one of the Volunteer Learning Designs, was a speaker; 17 global goals determined by the United Nations and the duties to be performed by the states related to these goals were mentioned. The webinar focused on the aspects of what we can do to problems individually, how we can contribute to society, nature and the world, and the concepts of volunteering.

The International Trade and Finance Department organized an e-seminar titled “COVID-19 and Climate Change” at 15.00 on Saturday, May 16, 2020. The event in which Assist. Prof. İrem Yalkı Berker from Okan University International Trade Department was the speaker, the topics such as the effects of global warming, which is one of the negative benefits of industrialization, on the economy and how these effects will change after COVID-19 were talked about. Berker who also answered the questions of the participants mentioned that downsizing after pandemic may be an option for economies.

IKU Department of Radio, Television and Cinema organized an e-talk titled “Explaining the Cinema” in which SİYAD member & Kadir Has University, Head of Radio, Television and Cinema Department Assoc. Prof. Melis Behlil was the speaker. In the interview that was held on the @ iku.rts Instagram account on Thursday, May 14, along with the change of the media and contexts, the differentiation of the ways of telling the cinema was also discussed. Radio, Television and Cinema Department interviews will continue to be held every week via the @ iku.rts Instagram account.

Kültür Point organized a webinar titled "Take action! Social Entrepreneurship”. In the event where Yunus Emre Benli, the founder of Volunteering Stories and one of the Volunteer Learning Designs, was a speaker; the solution of social problems, the concept of social entrepreneurship, difference between commercial entrepreneurs and social enterprises, and social entrepreneurship ecosystem in Turkey and in the world were mentioned. In the webinar, the steps to be taken to become a social entrepreneur were also explained to the participants.

Istanbul Kültür University Vocational School organized an e-seminar titled “Boutique Hotels in the New Normal Period” on Friday, May 15. In the event that was the Head of Tourism and Hotel Management Program Instructor Pelin Tuna was the moderator; Founder of Boutique Hotels, Publication Director of Boutique Hotels Book, Manager of Otelz Contract Mustafa Doruk participated as the speaker. Doruk, who shared detailed information on the differences between boutique hotels and small hotels; how boutique hotels were prepared for the new normal period after COVID-19; what are the forecasts for the summer period of 2020; and how to follow the pandemic as a Hotelz, then answered the questions of our students at the end of the event. .

Department of Economics organized an e-seminar titled “Economics Journalism in the Pandemic Process” on Thursday, May 14. TV100 Economy Editor Nazlı Tarhan Bolak who participated the event as a speaker, shared her observations about the effects of the pandemic process on economic journalism. Nazlı Tarhan Bolak who answered the questions of the participants emphasized the responsibilities and importance of journalists in the process.

Kültür Point organized a webinar titled “Exam Anxiety and Stress Management” for 12th grade students of Gebze Özel Yeni Umut Okulları on Monday, May 18, 2020. Exp. Psy. Aysu Çelenoğlu who participated in the event that was held through the Adobe Connect Virtual Classroom Application as a speaker explained the factors that cause anxiety and stress, and how to deal with them. Çelenoğlu, who advises on issues such as loss of motivation and stress increase in students who will take the university exam, especially during the pandemic process we are in; talked about the practices such as daily exercises and breathing exercises to the students.
