Academic Board of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Academic Board of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of 202-2022 Academic Year Fall Semester, organized with the participation of our Rector Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal. The meeting which was realized in December 23, Thursday at 14.00, Basın Ekspres Campus, started with the speech of Deputy Rector and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Prof. Dr. Sinan Alçın. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal conveyed her views to the academic staff at the board where the activities and academic processes carried out in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in the years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 were discussed. In the last part of the meeting, faculty members and lecturers conveyed their views. At the cocktail held after the assembly, academic-administrative staff and students came together.

"Foreign Trade in the New World: What awaits Family Companies?"

A panel titled "Foreign Trade in the New World: What awaits Family Companies" was held on Thursday, December 23, in cooperation with IKU Family Business and Entrepreneurship Application and Research Center (AGMER) and Management Consultants Association.

The online event started with the speeches of our Vice Rector & FEAS Dean V. Prof. Dr. Sinan Alçın, AGMER Director Assist. Prof. Nazan Çağlar and Management Consultants Association Chairperson Zeynep Tura.

Academician, Mentor Group Partner & Dünya Newspaper Columnist Dr. Hakan Çınar, EXIM Bank Marmara Regional Insurance and Coordination Manager İbrahim Görmüş and EXIM Bank Gebze Branch Deputy Manager Aydın Güngör attended the panel as speakers; Topics such as foreign trade, import-export, and credit were conveyed to the audience.

Başakşehir Living Lab Design Marathon

IKU Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, in cooperation with Başakşehir Living Lab (BLL) and Istanbul Design Factory (IDF), on 25-26 November 2021 under the direction of Assist. Prof. Arzu Erçetin and Assist. Prof. Derya Adıgüzel Özbek with the theme of "Interactive Urban Furniture Design" Başakşehir Living Lab Design Marathon was organized. On the first day of the workshop, the first design ideas were developed in the Başakşehir Living Lab campus, supported by the visits to the public spaces in Başakşehir district. On the second day, while the design ideas were finalized, the process was supported by the participation and seminars of professional stakeholders. As a result of the jury evaluation of the workshop results, three equivalent awards and one incentive award were given. The award ceremony of the marathon was held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 with the participation of Başakşehir Municipality Deputy Director of Information Technologies Ömer Karabayraktar and Başakşehir Living Lab (BLL) Coordinator Can Tunçsav. Our students had the opportunity to experience Başakşehir Living Lab by coming together with different university students and professional stakeholders during the workshop process and the award ceremony. In addition, prototype production of designs awarded by Başakşehir Municipality is planned.

“Participation in Architecture and Planning: Challenges and Opportunities”

As part of the 2021-2022 Academic Year Fall Semester events of the Istanbul Kültür University Department of Architecture, a panel titled Participation in Architecture and Planning: Challenges and Opportunities was held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at 15.30. The moderator of the panel was Asst. Prof. Z. Ayşe Gökşin, in which Istanbul City Council President Tülin Hadi, Gazhane Environmental Volunteers Nesrin Uçar and Işık Demirtaş, and Architecture for All Association İbrahim Emre Gündoğdu and Merve Gül Özokcu participated as speakers. Lecturer Dr. Selda Salman Sakızlı's book titled "The Theory of Cinema" has been published with the chapter titled "Deleuze and the Philosophy of Cinema"

Lecturer Dr. Selda Salman Sakızlı, one of the academicians of Department of the Radio, Television and Cinema, has published the book titled "The Theory of Cinema" with the chapter titled "Deleuze and the Philosophy of Cinema". In the book contributed by eighteen film writers and academicians; Starting with Hugo Münsterberg, one of the first theorists of cinema, and Lev Manovich, one of today's new media theorists, and digital cinema theory, a chronological and comprehensive selection is presented. Edited by Director and Writer Soner Sert, the book is an important resource for academics and students in the field of cinema, as well as a guide for cinephile audiences.

Our Men's Basketball Team Defeated Yeni Yüzyıl University

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Men's Basketball Team defeated Yeni Yüzyıl University 81-49 in the competition in the Istanbul 1st League. We congratulate our students and wish them continued success.

“Basic Design” Course End-Of-The-Year Exhibition

In the scope of “Basic Design” course of the Department of Architecture and exhibiton moderated by Research Assistant Hilal Iavarone and Assist. Prof. Emre Arslan, has been opened by our students. The exhibition, in which it includes the works of an entire year, can be visited in the second floor hall.

In 2013, I got into the Department of Psychology and met with Istanbul Kültür University. While I was a student, the activities and friendship relations at the university contributed a lot to me socially. Apart from social activities, it is very valuable for students to take part in activities within the university, to start their business life early and gain experience. I also worked in the Doğru Tercih unit during my student years. I spent this period very actively meeting many of my colleagues and teachers. After graduation, I gained experience by working at the Alumni Relations Association for a while. I enjoyed studying in the Department of Psychology. With the excitement of learning the requirements of my profession early, I did my internship voluntarily at Galatasaray’s Dormitory Care and Nursing Home. During my internship, I played a role in the execution of various social responsibility projects and the organization of events. After that, I completed my mandatory internships in the Aura Psychotherapy Cure with Arts and Education Centre and Darülacaze Home for Orphans and Children. These studies that I did during my student years opened the doors to many areas in my business life. After graduating in 2017, I gained experience in the education sector by working first in kindergarten and then in a college. Then I continued in the special education sector. The seminars I gave in the education sector, the students and parents I met contributed a lot to me. I am currently working as a Psychologist in Galatasaray’s Dormitory Care and Nursing Home, where I worked voluntarily seven years ago. It is a very nice feeling to be involved in the lives of individuals who have aged here, to benefit from their knowledge and experience, and to witness their life stories. As a graduate of the Department of Psychology, I continue my professional development by participating in the necessary test and therapy trainings and completing the Graduate Program of Clinical Psychology at Istanbul Aydın University, with the desire for lifelong learning.

2021-2022 Academic Year Faculty of Science and Letters Coffee Excuse Talks & Prof. Dr. Songul Esin

IKU Faculty of Science and Letters continues to organize "Coffee Talks Meetings" in order to share studies that are important in terms of research and analysis in the field of Basic Science and Social Sciences. The seminar titled "Crazy Veteran", where Prof. Dr. Songül Esin, one of the academicians of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, will be the speaker, will be held on Wednesday, December 29, between 15.00-17.00 on the CATS platform.

ERP Campus- Oracle Netsuite Training

In cooperation with the Industrial Engineering Club and ERP Kampüs, the "Oracle Net Suite" training program will be organized to contribute to the career development of students. The fourth training program will be held by ERP Campus Channel Sales Manager İnci Oralp and ERP Consultant Maral Taher on Wednesday, December 29, between 17.00-19.30 in the Industrial Engineering Department laboratory.

Deniz Karakuş – Department of Corporate Communications

Could you briefly describe yourself? Who is Deniz Karakuş in 2-3 sentences?

Hello, I was born in Kilis in 1997. I continued my primary, secondary and high school education in Kilis. In 2016, I won the Department of Computer Engineering of our university. I graduated this year and I continue my education life at IKU Graduate Education Institute Department of Computer Engineering. I am a person who likes to travel and take pictures. 😊

How did your participation in Kültür Family evolve?

In fact, as I mentioned while describing myself, I joined Kültür Family as a student in the first year of 2016, when a friend suggested our university to me. I worked as a "Kültür Ambassador" in the Department of Corporate Communications for about 4 years. I improved my communication skills by working both on promotional days and at events throughout the year. In the last year of my studentship, I supported some projects in our department during the preparation of data-based analyzes and reports related to my department. After my graduation, I started to work as a "Data Analyst and Reporting Specialist" in our Department of Corporate Communications after the interview with Deha Sevgen and Yavuz İlker Baldan.

What are the things that IKU adds to you?

When I became a member of Kültür Family, I met new people and gained many friendships. I have developed myself in this direction by assimilating the Constitution of Kültür. Most importantly, I was not a very social person before I became a member of Kültür, but thanks to İKÜ, I have reached the competence of being an active and social person.

Is there an unforgettable memory in the Kültür part of your life?

When I started as a student at Istanbul Kültür University in 2016, I attended the TEDx event held for the first time at our university. When I saw the students working there, I was like, “How can I be included in this team?” While I was thinking, I saw the application advertisement on social media. Afterwards, I started to take part in the team that organized the TEDx event. I can say that this was the turning point of my life, because I gained experience in different fields thanks to the people I met in this team. I also served as a Kültür Ambassador, and as a student club president…

If you had to describe Istanbul Kültür University in one word, what would that word be?

Family.

The Life of Permafrost: A History of Frozen Earth in Russian and Soviet Science

In the Anthropocene, the thawing of frozen earth due to global warming has drawn worldwide attention to permafrost. Contemporary scientists define permafrost as ground that maintains a negative temperature for at least two years. But where did this particular conception of permafrost originate, and what alternatives existed? The Life of Permafrost provides an intellectual history of permafrost, placing the phenomenon squarely in the political, social, and material context of Russian and Soviet science. Pey-Yi Chu shows that understandings of frozen earth were shaped by two key experiences in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. On one hand, the colonization and industrialization of Siberia nourished an engineering perspective on frozen earth that viewed the phenomenon as an aggregate physical structure: ground.

On the other, a Russian and Soviet tradition of systems thinking encouraged approaching frozen earth as a process, condition, and space tied to planetary exchanges of energy and matter. Aided by the US militarization of the Arctic during the Cold War, the engineering view of frozen earth as an obstacle to construction became dominant. The Life of Permafrost tells the fascinating story of how permafrost came to acquire life as Russian and Soviet scientists studied, named, and defined it.
