Istanbul Kultur University (IKU) Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver has published a message regarding the changing IKU agenda with COVID-19.

Dear Kültür Family,

We are going through a very thought-provoking and difficult period for human, community and environmental health. After the fires at the end of July, the flood disaster in the provinces of Bartın, Kastamonu and Sinop was extremely sad.

We reached our students residing in fire and flood areas. Knowing that our young people and their families are well and safe is our greatest comfort in this process. I would like to take this opportunity to convey my best wishes to my colleagues who work in our Kültür Family or whose relatives reside in disaster areas.

Dear Kültür Family,

Being an educator is a job that brings serious and large-scale responsibilities to people, nature and the environment, as well as a sense of meaning. In this context, as Kultur University, we launched our Solidarity Scholarships last week. We announced our 100 percent education scholarship opportunity to student candidates residing in the fire area and whose families were harmed. “As an educational institution that commits to the article “Kültür Person is Sensitive to Nature and Environment” in its corporate constitution, we will continue to take part in projects that will support social solidarity. 

We are trying to provide support with our means to all areas that require solidarity, especially the pandemic. However, we need a sustainable, systematic and organized effort to improve our sphere of influence and to touch more people and the wider environment. In this context, the opinions and evaluations of all members of Kültür are very important. I kindly ask you to participate in the survey, where we will share your feedback on corporate and social solidarity in the coming days.

The preference period, in which 2021 candidates applied, brought about quite different developments. The results were disappointing for a significant part of the university candidates preparing for the exam under the conditions of the pandemic. Following the extension of the application calendar until August 20, there was a change in the thresholds last week. This year, all universities will experience two additional placement periods.

According to our report released, we saw that around three thousand candidates visited our university. Our table visits reached four thousand. About a thousand candidates received support from our university for preference and career counseling. If we take into account today's conditions and the changes taking place, the numbers are lower than in previous years. I sincerely believe that the entire Kültür Family will work with the same determination as we enter the last week of the election period.

We all wish the first placement results to be good for both our university and the candidates. After the results, there are three critical periods in which we need to work with a high level of cooperation. Enrollment period and additional placement schedules.

The satisfaction of our candidates who will enroll in our university with their first placement and the smooth management of the registration processes are very important. We should keep communication at the highest level with every student who chooses our university and completes their registration. The happiness of our students and their families who prefer our university during the registration process is important both for our reputation and for the communication activities we will carry out during the additional placement period. I strongly request that all of our academic and administrative staff work without compromising their cooperation for the healthy communication of Kültür University with the candidates.

In the busy traffic of the preference period, very valuable initiatives are being undertaken on behalf of our university. Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Nazif Ekin Akalın and the academic staff of our faculty started their studies at our Motion Analysis Center located on Floor B1 of our Ataköy Campus. I sincerely believe that our center will carry out very valuable studies in the name of healthy life starting from the 2021-2022 academic year, and I wish success to the valuable academicians of our faculty.

In addition to the studies that support our education-research-social responsibility mission at our university, there are also news of very valuable projects for the future of our country and youth. In July, with the contacts of our Rector Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal, we shared the news of the internship protocol with the German Management Academy Niedersachsen, whose short name is DMAN (Die Deutsche Management Akademie Niedersachsen).

A multi-faceted protocol was signed with MODOKO last week within the scope of contribution to qualified workforce and university-industry cooperation studies. The first step of the protocol was signed with our Faculty of Architecture on Monday, August 9, 2021. The aim of our cooperation with MODOKO is to provide qualified graduates that our country needs on a sectoral basis. In this context, I would like to share that new projects will be realized with our Faculty of Law and Faculty of Engineering.

Despite all the exams that affect the ordinary course of life, it is very important for us to be able to work and produce. Every business we undertake is the responsibility and success of the Kultur University Family. We wish to share many beautiful works that we will share their success, pride and sense of meaning together as well as their difficulties.

Istanbul Kultur University Movement Analysis Research and Application Center aims to prevent health problems in later ages by questioning the basic movement characteristics of the person. Established within the body of Istanbul Kultur University, the center draws attention by offering students the opportunity to practice as well as theoretical knowledge. Movement Analysis Research and Application Center , which was established to provide education, practice and research in all fields related to movement sciences and analysis, to define movement disorders and to develop the most effective treatment methods and recommendations for these definitions, to provide consultancy services, and to train qualified scientists and health personnel at all levels, aims to detect the cause of movement-related problems before the disease progresses.

 Providing information about the center, Istanbul Kultur University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Nazif Ekin Akalan said “It is the only center in Turkey that has all the departments related to movement problems intertwined. This center finds the cause of your movement problems. Before experiencing pain on movement, it tries to understand where this pain originates from. Currently, our students, who take this basic level of applied training, move from the second year to the third year. We understood that no matter how well we give the theoretical course, it is necessary to practice at the end. That's why we practice even our most basic lessons.”

The IKU Red Wings Team, which is under the name of the RAS committee of the IKU IEEE Club, which represents our university in the "Combating UAV" category of the TEKNOFEST competition, made its mark on the final stage with the project it prepared. The canopy, engine holders, landing gear, canopy shelf and software developed by our students, the UAV can take off, drive and land autonomously.

The aim of the competitors in the Fighting UAV category is to detect and lock the rival UAVs, both virtually and autonomously, and get points with the UAV they have prepared.

Houyem Snene, a 2020 graduate of the Istanbul Kultur University (IKU) Department of Architecture, was selected among 970 applicants and accepted to the 4Cities Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program with a 100% scholarship. 4Cities Erasmus Mundus Joint Master is an urban planning master's program that continues in the first semester in Brussels and the next three semesters in Vienna, Copenhagen and Madrid. Congratulations to our graduate.

A congratulation ceremony was held at Hadiqa Cafe & Restaurant for the students who finished the program with a degree on Monday, August 16, 2021, by the IKU Vocational School Business Management Program. Business Management Program Head Lecturer N. Gözde Bircan and academics Lecturer Merve Eseoğlu and Lecturer Kübra Mertel attended the event; The winner of the program, Can Ertuğral, the second of the program, Yusuf Aslan, and the third of the program, A Ebru Bayram, were congratulated and presented with certificates of appreciation and gifts. The congratulatory meeting held in the open air ended with souvenir photos and entertaining video shoots.

In order to draw attention to the upcoming Great Istanbul Earthquake and to commemorate August 17th 1999, a video was prepared by the Governor of Istanbul Ali Yerlikaya and the words of Ömür Kınay Alkan, one of our academics of the Department of Communication and Design & one of the members of the board of the Disabled Students Unit.

Ömür Kınay Alkan, one of our academics of the Department of Communication and Design & one of the members of the board of the Disabled Students Unit, was a speaker with Prof. Dr. Haluk Eyidoğan from ITU Geophysics Engineering and Environmental Engineer Cevahir Efe Akçelik from TMMOB Istanbul Provincial Coordination Board at the panel organized by the Chamber of Geophysical Engineers (JFMO) Istanbul Branch on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 18:30.

Could you briefly describe yourself? Who is Res. Assist. Güler Uğur Melikoğlu in 2-3 sentences?

I was born in 1991 in Izmir. I graduated from Trakya University, Department of Turkish Language and Literature in 2013. I graduated from Trakya University Turkish Language and Literature Master's Program in March 2016. Since September 2016, I have been continuing my doctorate education at the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Istanbul Kultur University. As of February 2016, I have been working as a Research Assistant in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at IKU.

How did your participation in Kültür Family evolve?

In 2010, when I was an undergraduate student, I attended TUDOK, which was organized by the IKU Department of Turkish Language and Literature and contributed greatly to the students of our field, as a listener. This congress, which I attended when I was a second-year undergraduate student, was instrumental in both meeting the professors of the field and making contact with the academic environment for the first time. In January 2016, while I was continuing my postgraduate education at Trakya University, I saw the research assistant advertisement opened by Istanbul Kultur University. Despite the six years that have passed, my memories of IKU were extremely vivid. During my participation in TUDOK, I was very impressed by the importance Kültür attaches to free thought, its contribution to scientific meetings and the communication it established with its students. The idea of being an employee of such a university excited me. I completed my application by preparing the necessary documents in a short time. During the application process, I was very impressed by Kültür's sincere attitude towards young academics when I made a few phone calls with Assist. Prof. Kayhan Şahan, one of the professors of our department, about my documents. After the written and oral exam, I learned that I was qualified for the staff, I think it would not be wrong to say that it was one of the happiest moments in my life. After my first meeting with Prof. Dr. Ömür Ceylan, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, I realized that I was in the right place. IKU offered the most productive and warmest environment for a student who would take a new step into the academic community. As of February 1, 2016, I became a member of the Kültür Family and since then I am happy to have joined this family.

What are the things that IKU adds to you?

Since IKU is my first workplace, it first taught me the importance of professionalism in business life. Thanks to the healthy working environment it offers and the close interest of the experts in their fields, it helped me to improve my professional achievements. He taught me how tolerant is important in human relations. But I think most importantly, IKU showed me how valuable it is to be a family in a working environment with our colleagues, administrators and students. Because in this way, we have overcome many obstacles in front of us without difficulty and we have understood the importance of being a family.

The book also reveals the work undertaken in the Far-East and the allied efforts to break the Japanese military cipher code named Purple. The book ends with a re-assessment of the work undertaken by the British code breaker and mathematician Alan Turing and a brief overview of the codebreaking operations undertaken by GCHQ during the formative period of the Cold War.
