Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver published a message regarding the changing IKU agenda with the New Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

Dear Kültür Family,

We started the 2020/21 Spring Semester. As of February 15, we will say hello to our students again. Due to our work, our agenda has always been young people. However, for the last month, I have been watching carefully the expectations, dreams, attitude and stance of university youth in the media; I trust Generation Z as our future.

The university is the first address that young people, who will have a say in the future of the country and the world, discover life, with all its flavour and torment. It is a place of contemplation. Universities have a similar attitude to the spirit of the youth by nature, more precisely, they are expected to be. It breaks the routine, defends, thinks, questions, criticizes, investigates, and curious. What is expected from the university is to protect, love and embrace students and young people regardless of their life preferences and orientations, regardless of gender, language, religion, race, ethnic origin, socio-economic status, as much as education and research.

Last year, we addressed the candidates with the discourse "Kültür is Freedom" in our communication work. This message is not a communication discourse, but a philosophy of Kültür that we have adopted and internalized as a family. At this point, I would like to thank all members of the Kültür Family who worked by always remembering Atatürk's motto, "Teachers, Republic expects generations with free ideas, free wisdom and free conscience from you.” whose principles and revolutions we have taken as a guide, and made their students feel by internalizing the philosophy of freedom.

Dear Kültür Family,

The pandemic taught us two truths: the value of face-to-face education and that distance learning will now be a permanent part of life. With this awareness, we made our preparations by taking all possibilities into account. At the meeting we held with our deans, our Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Nazif Ekin Akalan said that the next 5 weeks are decisive at the point of COVID-19 mutation. Observing the masks, distance and hygiene rules precisely, especially in our on-campus works; I strongly request that the directions of our Health Unit be followed carefully.

Regardless of the direction of the decision regarding the spring term; we have opportunities to ensure the sustainability of our services. The hygiene conditions of our campuses are regularly monitored. In a possible case, we made our hybrid education plans with our faculties and shared them with our students. Our lecture theatres have been developed in this context and will continue to be developed. In addition, we are in the preparation of new digital projects that will ensure the highest level of interaction with the student. At this point we need; shared values, joint effort, and being agile in any scenario.

With the pandemic, taking into account the needs of our distance education students for almost a year, supportive new actions are of great importance at this stage. It is our responsibility to take special account of the learning needs of our first and fourth graders in particular. In this context, our Law School has started a remarkable initiative. This application, which they call educational supplement this summer, for all classes, is an effective touch to the dialogue and educational needs of our students during the pandemic period. In addition, it will also launch literacy projects under different topics in the field of law, which are open to all students, in the spring semester. I wish success to our Dean Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult.  Bahri Öztürk and the academic staff of our Faculty. I think that learning initiatives within this scope will be inspiring for us all with their results.

Dear Kültür Family,

We are in a time when everything needs to be rethinked. Many of the truths we learned and accepted before have changed. Before the pandemic, we used to say 'every problem has a solution'. Now we are in discussions where each solution brings a certain set of problems, questions, and risks.

We need actions that bring about change, expressed as disruptive innovation. New skill sets, new learning models, new partnerships, new curriculum… While doing this, we must engage in project-based learning, problem solving, interdisciplinary work and cooperation. We must gain the ability to use data and intuition in coordination, and believe in the value of common mind. It is useful to review our roles, rules, facts, knowledge, experiences, in short everything that makes us who we are...

I have no doubt that we can achieve it. I wish the new academic term to be healthy and successful for all of us.

The ideas of our Head of Board of Trustees Dr Bahar Akıngüç Günver and our Rector Prof. Dr Erhan Güzel were included in Nuran Çakmakçı’s, Hürriyet Newspaper Education Service Manager, article titled “Can universities Open in Spring?”.

Istanbul Kültür University Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel, who noted that young people preparing for university have managed an important crisis due to the pandemic, suggests that candidates who want to study with scholarship should start their research now.

IKU Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel, who pointed out that university candidates have gained a very important crisis experience during the pandemic period, said that young people should allocate time to university research along with digitalization. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Güzel, who advised the candidates to contact universities about the department, program and opportunities they want to study, gave the following messages especially for the students who want to study with scholarship: “There are many types of scholarships that can be obtained according to different criteria such as success scholarship, foreign language preparation, sports, master’s degree. Here, it is important for families and students to interpret the concept of scholarship correctly. Scholarship is generally considered as an economic opportunity only. However, in addition to the financial opportunities it provides, the scholarship is also a guarantee of the future success of the student. Scholarship students also play an active role in project development, innovative thinking, academic and scientific initiatives during their education.

Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel continued his advice regarding the candidates who want to study with a scholarship as follows: “You are preparing for an important exam in a crisis period. However, you can come out of this crisis by getting stronger with the right future strategy. First, be a researcher for your own life. To study at your ideal department, research the university's general and specific scholarship programs. Scholarship research is the first rehearsal of professional life for a student.

Scholarship Models Based on Individual Competence and Professional Tendency

According to Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel, who stated that they support equal opportunity in education, scholarship opportunities are always open for young people with entrepreneurial, innovative ideas. Our Rector also gave the following messages about the universities' scholarship programs based on individual competence and professional tendencies: “Each foundation university has scholarships designed according to the interests and needs of the students. First choice discount, exam success, GPA, success in sports… These scholarships are usually available during the preference period or after the student starts university. However, there are also alternative opportunities for scholarship. Students should definitely research the scholarship models, durations and approaches of universities. For example, as Istanbul Kültür University, we have created a system called We Accept where candidates can express themselves and their projects before their preferences or even YKS. We received over 50 thousand applications in 2 years. Thousands of our students are currently studying at various rates with scholarships. 7 years uninterrupted. Applications are made digitally. Candidates are invited for an interview by the academic staff of the department they target after completing their forms. Our applications for 2021 candidates have also started. We will have 3 application periods until May. "

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel who stated that Scholarship Admission Programs are a work and life simulation, gave the following message to young people who have gone through a stressful education and exam preparation process during the pandemic: “This is a crisis period. But don't delay your dreams. Research all the possibilities that are available to you. The university is a very important experience that will reveal your potential and bring your ideas and projects into life. Although there is not currently face to face education, ask for information from the digital offices of universities, research academicians, examine distance education opportunities and systems, digital university, look for certificate programs to complete the degree. University is a new road and it is up to you to proceed on this new road.”

The first application period of We Accept, which offers the chance to study in undergraduate programs of Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) with a scholarship, has started for 2021 YKS candidates.

The first period applications of We Accept, which has been offering scholarships to more than a thousand young people in undergraduate programs since 2019, can be made until April 2, 2021 at https://we-accept.com. The results will be announced on April 9, 2021.

The second period of We Accept, which is the university's application program providing scholarships will start on April 5th and the third period on May 31st. In the evaluation process of We Accept application, which will take place in three stages: examination of forms, interview and commission evaluation; candidates' personality characteristics, professional competencies, project proposals and references will also be determinant. Personal data of candidates will be kept confidential in the application forms submitted to the evaluation commission.

We Accept scholarships for which 2021 YKS candidates can apply will be valid for paid quotas in 8 faculties including Law, Science and Letters, Economic and Administrative Sciences, Education, Art and Design, Architecture, Engineering and Health Sciences. Candidates will be able to access all details regarding the program providing scholarships, through which applications are made digitally, at https://we-accept.com. The university, where two out of every three students receive higher education services with scholarships and discounts, has other opportunities, especially the success and first choice scholarships, at aday.iku.edu.tr.  

Stating that the coronavirus epidemic has adversely affected everyone's lives and continues to do so, Istanbul Kültür University Department of Psychology academic Assoc. Prof. Melis Seray Özden Yıldırım said that times of crisis also negatively affected partner relations.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, private life between couples has deeply shaken. Disputes began to arise between couples who spent a long time at home due to the pandemic. Stating that the divorce rates have increased due to these reasons, Assoc. Prof. Melis Seray Özden Yıldırım said, “We know that there is a serious increase in divorce rates during the pandemic period. The reason for this increase is usually communication problems, ”.

“Pandemic Period Affected Couples the Most"

Stating that we were caught unprepared for the pandemic period, Assoc. Prof. Melis Seray Özden Yıldırım said, “The most common situation people face in this process is uncertainty. Families and couples were the most affected by the pandemic reality. During the pandemic, most of the relations either ended in separation or the relations got stronger. The biggest factor affecting this process is that people are intertwined for longer than normal times. The fact that couples spend a long time in the same house creates some problems. When couples spend longer time with each other in the house, if there are some problems between them that could not be solved before, those problems also come to light. This causes some conflicts between the couples.”

"The Reason of Divorce is Communication Problem"

Stating that they consider the pandemic period as a traumatic process, Assoc. Prof. Melis Seray Özden Yıldırım said, “It is not clear when the pandemic period will end. For this reason, people also have concerns about when the pandemic will end. Since the pandemic period affects our individual psychology, it is beginning to affect our relations. Again, we know that there is a serious increase in divorce rates during the pandemic period. The reason for this increase is usually communication problems. In other words, the fact that people are in the same house and use “you” language instead of “me” language, they cannot empathize with each other, they get offended with each other instead of talking, all of them constitute the steps on the way to the divorce process.

"Create Small Spaces for Yourself"

Emphasizing that couples should create a space of their own within the same house, our lecturer said, “As long as the physical environment of the house allows, small spaces in the house where couples can stay alone should create their own time zones. The fact that a person creates small spaces for themselves does not mean that they are bored from the opposite side. At the same time, I suggest people working in a home office environment to make a timeline for the distinction between business and private life.”

Stating that being constantly interested in social media also causes controversy between couples, Assoc. Prof. Melis Seray Özden Yıldırım continued her words as follows:

“Valentine's Day, February 14, is a day when we celebrate love. In my therapies, couples mostly complain about not using the words of love for each other. Couples often say, "He/she never tells me he/she loves me." That's why we should be a little more generous when it comes to love. We must tell our partner that we love them."

Noting that trained manpower is very important in achieving the objectives of Turkey's Space Program, İKÜ Department of Physics Vice President Asst. Prof. Ayşegül F. Yelkenci also said ‘’There is a lot of work to be done in the space field. We can even say that there is no other field of science open to so much change and exploration”.

"Turkey is rapidly Shows Progress”

Asst. Prof. Ayşegül Yelkenci stated that the Turkish Space Agency will create a driving force by gathering space and academic astronomical studies under one roof, and said that the program is a desired and expected stage by the astronomy community and space engineers. Saying that Turkey has enough academic infrastructures for to do space studies, she emphasized the importance of encouraging researchers and training qualified manpower in achieving the program's goal with the following words:

"Both TÜBİTAK and universities have studies in the field of space in our country. There are academicians working on earth observation satellites, scientific satellites for astronomical purposes, and space weather. Any initiative that will increase the project support of our observatories will encourage researchers. Although the rocket trials started in satellite 2020 within the framework of projects under TÜBİTAK Space and in some universities are very new, rapid progress is being made. When it comes to working with satellite data, much more manpower will be required. In summary, it is very important to support qualified workforce and young people who are interested in this field in achieving the program's goal.’’

"Space is the Profession of Today and the Future"

Stating that different branches of science work together in the field of space, our teacher said the following to young people who aim for a career in this field:

“Young people who want to work in the space field don't necessarily have to be astronomers. This is a versatile field. For example, astronomers, astrophysicists, physicists, physics engineers, geologists work in determining and evaluating the basic targets in the construction of a satellite. In the construction of satellite elements such as silicon chips and circuits, experts from other fields such as electrical-electronics engineers, physics engineers, solid-state physicists are also working. Aircraft and aerospace engineers, rocket engineers, orbital mechanics experts and mathematicians are working together during the launch of the satellite. Computer and software engineers, math-computer graduates, data scientists are involved in the processing of the data obtained after the satellite is launched and preparing the automatic pipeline. Not only satellites but also large telescopes to be built, such as an optician and a mechanical engineer, need manpower to understand the construction and perspective of the telescope."

Asst. Prof. Ayşegül Yelkenci stated that the Turkish Space Agency started posting jobs in different disciplines before the program was announced, and pointed out that space is always the present and future profession and made the following suggestions to the students:

“There is a lot of work to be done in the space field. In fact, we can say that there is no other science area open to so much change and exploration. Collaboration with different disciplines also increases career opportunities in this field. There is even a branch called astroarcheology, which examines astronomical information in ancient ruins on earth with archeology, astrobiology, who studies extraterrestrial life with biologists, and even medical astronomy, which is caused by the health problems of astronauts and experts who travel to space. Numerical simulations are needed to reduce and easily process the observation data that come in terabytes every day in the space field, and sometimes to understand the inner structure of stars or the collisions of galaxies. Supercomputers, parallel programming, computers using distributed processing techniques, software engineers and data scientists work for this job. I recommend that young people who are interested in space and want to pursue a career in this field should first do research from the right sources. Let them trust the resources provided by official institutions such as universities and space agencies. "

Is It Worth The Investment?

Pointing out that all investments from space-related education to industry will contribute to science and economy in the medium and long term and by stating that space research inspired many products we use today our professor said that:

"The questions of whether there is a need to invest so much in space and what will it bring us are also discussed. A space project requires different scientists to work. It develops innovative technology companies that take care of R&D by cooperating with the industry. Most importantly, every scientific project inspires a new one. For example, if we can take selfies today, we owe it to the Hubble Space Telescope because digital camera chips CCDs were developed and developed for the first time in the Hubble space telescope and entered our mobile phones. The technologies we wear on our arms today that count our health, heartbeat, and steps were born from biosensors developed to constantly monitor the health of astronauts and experts in the space station. Borcams, teflon pans, ballpoint pens, wet wipes, diapers, Gore-Tex raincoats, fleece… In short, there is much more space in our lives than we think.’’

Asst. Prof. Ayşegül Yelkenci stated that education investments are also important in the development of work in the field of space:

"Awareness of astronomy should be gained from a young age. Compulsory astronomy lessons will start in high schools in our country next year. As Kültür University, we offer space awareness and astronomy lessons to all our students. We have 3 Selective Out of Space courses on astronomy and space. This year, we will open a new one for our Faculty of Education students. We are working with the Turkish Astronomy Association and the Ministry of National Education not only for our own university, but also for teachers who are currently working but want to improve themselves. We organize at least 5 workshops a year. In addition, in 2020, we brought together a very comprehensive book AstroBilgi, especially teachers and students interested in Space, with readers from IKU Publishing House.’’

Along with the data on COVID-19 cases, the mutation process and variant concepts of the virus continue to arouse public interest. Assoc. Prof. Pınar Obakan Yerlikaya, an academic at IKU Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, said that COVID-19, which is called SARS-COV-2 in the literature, undergoes mutations in order to bind to human cells more tightly and reproduce more easily.

Recently, a group of scientists, including the director of the American National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci, stated that the double mask is especially important to prevent the transmission of new variants. Assoc. Prof. Pınar Obakan Yerlikaya who states that it is possible to reduce the permeability of the virus with double masks, said about the use of double masks: “The feature of masks is to block virus-containing droplets and prevent them from entering our respiratory tract. At this point, the more physical barriers in the mask, the more droplets we can block. It is also very important to use the right masks. It is important to choose surgical masks and N95 masks containing 3 layers. Especially when it comes to our exposure to new variants, the possibility of developing disease increases even more, so wearing double masks, maintaining social distance, and not entering closed spaces as much as possible are the precautions that should be taken.

"Mutation can make the virus stronger or weaker"

Our teacher, who also clarified the concepts of virus mutation and variant, pointed out that viruses are not living structures unless they infect a host cell, and that they need a host cell to reproduce and become alive. Assoc. Prof. Pınar Obakan Yerlikaya said the following about the mutation of the coronavirus: “The inheritance material that the COVID-19 virus transfers to newly formed viruses while reproducing is RNA. Hence an RNA virus. It infects human cells first. Then, it makes our cells make the proteins encoded in the viral RNA using protein-forming mechanisms. In other words, the factory for the production of new coronaviruses has now been becoming our cells. "

Assoc. Prof. Obakan Yerlikaya who noted that RNA viruses have more mutations than DNA viruses, also stated that SARS-COV-2 undergoes mutations in order to bind to human cells more tightly and reproduce more easily. Assoc. Prof. Obakan Yerlikaya said the following regarding the process of the mutation: “RNA contains nucleic acids similar to DNA,”. As DNA or RNA is re-synthesized at each division, a new cell or a new virus is formed, nucleic acid changes, called mutations, occur. These changes can make viruses stronger or weaker. What we mean by power is that they are more contagious or lethal. We see that some viruses develop adaptations in a short time while keeping up with their hosts or environments. These adaptations are mutations.

Pay Attention to S Protein

Our teacher who points out that the rate of mutation increases as viruses are transmitted and enter new hosts, also clarifies the concept of the most commonly heard viral variant with COVID-19: “The viral variant is a subtype that has mutated and has acquired new features compared to the first main virus. For example, we see that the new coronavirus has new variants in different countries, that is, new mutations and therefore new variants appear within the population of that country. For example, variants of SARS-COV-2 have been shown in the UK, South Africa and Nigeria. Their common feature is that they carry a mutation in one of the amino acids (Spike protein) of the S protein that the virus uses to attach to our cells. With S protein mutations, new variants can bind to our cells more tightly. So they become more contagious and infectious. The good news is that these variants do not change the course of the disease."

The variants that are found in Turkey

Assoc. Prof. Obakan Yerlikaya who pointed out that these variants are also spreading around the world as a result of international travels and violation of pandemic conditions, states that violation of pandemic measures is effective in mutations. Our teacher who underlined that global measures should be tightened and followed in order to prevent the virus mutating, becoming more contagious or more lethal, said regarding England, South Africa and Brazil variants seen in Turkey: "More infectious version of the virus is in our country. In addition, in various studies, also in Turkey, mutations have been detected in RNA sequences of the virus which encode both S protein and other non structural proteins. However, these mutations did not cause a structural change, especially in the S protein, the binding protein of the virus, as in the UK and South Africa variants. It is the responsibility of all both to prevent the spread of variants come from abroad and to ensure that there are no more contagious variants in Turkey."

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics organized a webinar titled "Covid-19 and New Generation Biotechnological Vaccines" on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. Assist. Prof. Cihan Taştan from Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics attended the event which held on Adobe Connect Virtual Classroom Application as a speaker. In the seminar attended by our students and graduates, updated information on the latest status of vaccines developed against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which has affected the whole world, was shared. Given the increasing mutation rates, ideas on new vaccine production strategies were discussed.

IKU Vocational School Digital Vocational Education Method Group made its fifth meeting on February 12, 2021, Friday in the Hybrid classroom created by our university’s infrastructure. The “IKU-MYO Digital Vocational Education” Method has defined by the Digital Education Supervisor and Head of IKU MYO Assist. Prof. Sinan Kesici and the information about the studies which the sub-study groups did were shared. Speaking at the meeting Assist. Prof. Sinan Kesici shared the studies about the subjects such as, “İKÜ MEAGEM-Vocational Education Research and Development Center”, “Vocational Education in the Workplace”, “Vocational Qualifications Authority”, “Vocational Education Method Digital Vocational Training Method Curriculum Studies”, “2021 Spring Semester Vocational Education and Training Practice Principles”, “Manager Reverse Mentor Application in Vocational School” and “Student Representative Meetings and the New Applied Trainings Framework Regulation”.

Asimov Technology Club, established on November 9, 2020 within the constitution of Istanbul Kültür University, is a student club that produces projects based on engineering and aims to participate in national and international competitions with the projects it produces. For this purpose, a rocket team was established to participate in the "Rocket Competition" conducted by TEKNOFEST on November 20, 2020. The Project and Club Consultant of the Rocket Team is Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Eriş, a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

What is TEKNOFEST?

TEKNOFEST is the first and only aviation, space and technology festival in Turkey, organized by the Turkey Technology Team Foundation and the Republic of Turkey Industry and Technology Ministry 's executive with the stakeholders of organizations that play a critical role in the development of National Technology in Turkey.

What is Rocket Competition?

There are four categories in the competition;

High School Category (5 thousand feet)
Medium Altitude Category (10 thousand feet)
High Altitude Category (20 thousand feet)
Difficult Duty Category (10 thousand feet)

Within the scope of the competition, teams are required to prepare 3 different reports: Preliminary Design Report, Critical Design Report, Shooting Preparation Report. A pre-selection will take place according to the results of the Preliminary Design Report evaluation. Teams that are entitled to financial support will be determined according to their Critical Design Report results. Teams are required to design according to a rocket engine they will choose from the Engine Catalogs to be published after the contest application process is over.

The Rocket Competition will be held in Salt Lake and the winning teams will be announced at TEKNOFEST.

Asimov-X Rocket Team and Goal

Our Asimov-X Rocket Team consists of 7 team members and a team advisor. Our team first started by determining the team name and creating the team logo. Our team will compete in the Medium Altitude Category. After about 2 months of R&D work, the details of the rocket's subsystems were determined and the rocket formation was started on the computer. Our team has made its application to TEKNOFEST and prepares a preliminary design report, which is a pre-selection report. The goal of our Rocket Team is to successfully deliver all the reports and remain as a finalist, then fly our rocket in the skies of Salt Lake. Despite being established in a difficult process, the goal of our team is not only to be a finalist, but to receive awards with a degree. Our team continues to work diligently in this direction.

Istanbul Kültür University Vocational School (MYO) organized an e-seminar titled “Investment Banking in Turkey and Around the World” on February 12, 2021. In the seminar moderated by Lecturer Ayşegül Berrak Köten Head of the Evening Program of Banking and Insurance, Alparslan Budak, Group Manager of Citibank, was the guest. The position of the moderator of the event, which was held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 15:00 via Instagram, was undertaken by Mücella Ezgin, Deputy Head of the Kültür Point Unit. Besides the academic and administrative staff of IKU, external participants also showed interest in the live broadcast. Spring Semester lectures of the "Philosophy of Mathematics and Thought Workshop" organized by Kültür Point under the instructor of Numan Aydınoğlu started on Friday, 19 February. 30 people attended the first lesson of the spring term.

Kültür Point continues to organize “Academy of Today and Future’s Kültür of Life” in order to support our students’ career planning process. The Vocational School will organize a webinar titled "Achieving Excellence in Communication", in which topics such as what agencies expect from students to become the preferred communicator in the sector, the functioning of the agencies and the competencies to be a perfect communicator will be conveyed. In cooperation with AGMER and the Management Consultants Association, a webinar titled “Transformation to the Future in Family Businesses” will be organized in order to discuss the problems faced by family businesses. Can you describe yourself with 2-3 sentences? Who is Research Assistant Aras Yolusever?

I was born in Istanbul's Bahçelievler district in September 1993. I always say I'm glad I was born in Istanbul, in fact, I often think that I can't give enough of it. I completed my undergraduate and graduate studies at Istanbul Kültür University. For my doctorate education, I transferred to Yıldız Technical University.

How has your participation in the Kültür Family developed?

I met my Kültür Family when I was just 18 years old. I remember the first day I came to visit the school like it was yesterday. I lived as a student for 7 years, 4 years undergraduate and 3 years graduate, in Ataköy campus. I have many memories that I remember with a laugh. I completed my undergraduate education in 2015 and graduate education in 2018. Then I started to work as a Research Assistant in the Department of Economics. I have been a member of this family for about 10 years.
