Comprehensive Educational Cooperation between IKU Vocational School and Istanbul Energy Inc.

Istanbul Energy Inc. and Istanbul Kultur University (IKU) Vocational School came together at the Istanbul Energy Inc. General Directorate as part of the educational cooperation.

To the meeting where a protocol for cooperation was signed; Istanbul Energy Inc. General Manager Yüksel Yalçın, Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager Müge Çakır and Ayşegül Özkan, IKU Vocational School Manager Asst. Prof. Sinan Kesici, Alternative Energy Resources Program Head Lecturer Dr. Makbule Tamkaş and Vocational School Secretary Lecturer Kerem Yücesan attended.

Speaking at the meeting, Asst. Prof. Sinan Kesici and Istanbul Energy General Inc. Manager Yüksel Yalçın; They stated that they agreed to meet the qualified intermediate personnel need of the sector in the field of renewable energy and to cooperate on practical training in enterprises.

In this context, in the "Climate Change Processes Management Office", which started its activities in the Biogas Energy Production Facility of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in the Silivri Seymen region, a place was allocated for the academicians-students of IKU Vocational School to carry out technical studies and academic activities. In addition, it was decided to make a comprehensive evaluation of the issue with a meeting to be held in the future, by taking principle decisions on the possibilities of expanding the cooperation in education.

Success of our graduate Nilay Dağlar in the Social Centers Architectural Project Competition

The team, which included Nilay Dağlar, a graduate of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, came in third in the Eyüpsultan region category of the Social Centers Architectural Project Competition.

Fashion Design Program Participated in “IF Moda EXPO International Fashion, Apparel and Accessories Virtual Fair”

Organized in cooperation with globalpiyasa.com, an e-export platform approved by the T.R. Ministry of Commerce, the “IF FASHION EXPO International Fashion, Ready-to-Wear and Accessories Virtual Fair” was opened with the participation of many companies. Istanbul Kultur University Vocational School Fashion Design Program awaits its visitors at the virtual fair, which will be open between 8 June 2021 and 30 April 2022.

IF Fashion Expo International Fashion, Ready-to-Wear, Textile, Saddlery, Shoes and Accessories Virtual Fair, launched between 8-11 June 2021 in cooperation with the Fashion and Ready-to-Wear Federation (MHGF); It will provide services for a year with many digital events such as B2B, URGE and webinars.

Success of Radio and Television Technology Program Graduates

The film "Fikirtepe Social Hüsran", directed by Fırathan Mehmet Güleç, a graduate of IKU Vocational School (MYO) Radio and Television Technology Program, and Oğuzhan Güllü, won the second prize at the "2th Örsçelik Balkan Short Film Festival".

Asst. Prof. Esin Hasgül and Çiğdem Karabağ's Research, Published in Idealkent Magazine

The research titled “Postmodern Indicators of Advertising Language Used in Themed Housing Projects in Urban Life” by Asst. Prof. Esin Hasgül, an academician of IKU Architecture Department, and Çiğdem Karabağ, a graduate student, was designed within the scope of the “MIMY0115-Culture, Housing and Design Approaches” course given in the Architectural Design Graduate Program, It was published in the 31st issue of Idealkent magazine in 2020.

“Budget and Planning Management Certificate Program”

The Faculty of Engineering organizes the "Budget and Planning Management Certificate Program" in order to provide training on the preparation and implementation phases of inter-unit plan-budget-cash flow studies in construction, project and real estate development companies. The training program to be given by Sinan Bayburt, Ege Yapı Inc. Budget and Planning Manager, will be held on July 3-4 at 12:00 on CATS.

“Project Management Certificate Program”

The Faculty of Engineering organizes the "Project Management Certificate Program" in order to disseminate international standards and methods in project management, and to support individuals-institutions who do their work with traditional and modern approaches to increase their productivity and profitability by applying project management. The training program, which will be given by Project Management Trainer and Consultant High Architect Dr. Şölen Çöl, will be held on July 3-4 between 14.00-16.00 over CATS.

Undoubtedly, it is an important virtue to recognize people around them. So how well do we know the building blocks of the Kültür Family? We devoted this part of our agenda to our colleagues who have worked hard to move Istanbul Kültür University one step further.

Res. Assist. Ufuk Küçükyazıcı – Department of Architecture

Could you briefly describe yourself? Who is Res. Assist. Ufuk Küçükyazıcı in 2-3 sentences?

I am a person who tries to see the fun side of life. I've always tried to solve the challenges that come my way by making them fun. The year I was preparing for the university exam was among the times I had the most fun. As a result, I won the ITU Department of Architecture. After my undergraduate education, I completed my graduate education in ITU Architecture Graduate Program. In ITU Architectural Design Doctorate Program; I continue my studies on the potentials of common living spaces, different lifestyles and the diversification of spatial possibilities in affordable housing alternatives. In academic studies in the field of architecture, I am interested in issues such as the spatial counterparts of daily life habits, the spatial counterparts of gender roles, social space, housing research, participatory design approaches, the use of common space in housing areas, and the transformation of public and private spaces. I love knitting, skating, cycling and walking around the city. I also advise students to learn knitting in classes; I also learned it during my architectural education, within the scope of architectural project course. Knitting has helped me a lot to understand the design action that takes place in the mind and how design emerges. I make toys with knitting, I usually get bored of following the recipe or application steps, I make patterns myself.

How did your participation in Kültür Family evolve?

According to my career goals, I planned to continue my academic studies after doing professional practice in the field of architecture for a while. I started ITU Architectural Design Doctorate Program in 2015. During my professional practice, I had the opportunity to work with many architects who graduated from the Architecture Department of Istanbul Kultur University. At the same time, among my friends whom I knew from the university, and with whom I took courses in master's and doctorate programs, there were those who worked at IKU. I knew the academic staff in the Department of Architecture because of their academic studies, and as I heard from my friends, I thought it was a fun place to work as well. But when I was accepted to the doctorate program, a staff announcement was made in the IKU Department of Architecture. At this time, I could not apply for this announcement because my student certificate was not issued yet. A few days after the application deadline, my student certificate was issued. I was very sorry that I missed the ad with a few days. After a while, I saw an announcement again and I applied the minute I saw it. Afterwards, the recruitment processes started and I started to work as a research assistant in May 2016.

What are the things that IKU adds to you?

There were many things I learned during my time at IKU. My colleagues make the biggest contribution to my life. I have found colleagues who are with me both in good and bad times in my personal life and with whom we can produce together in academic studies.

Architecture is a difficult education. It requires serious time planning for both students and academics. I had the opportunity to discover how the studio environment can be more educational and fun with the academics I took the architectural design course together.

In the meantime, I learned to use time better and to organize time planning for myself, my colleagues and students. Apart from academic studies, one of the most important things that IKU contributed to me was learning the SAP system. I am also a SAP-Orion Faculty key user. Actually, I was the department key user when I first started the task. That's when I met the SAP-GUI program. At first it seemed very complicated, but over time I discovered the details and learned the system. I worked as a department key user for two years. Then my commission duties changed. I took part in different commissions such as accreditation, internship and events for two years, but I realized that I love the work I do with SAP-Orion. Last year, while the pandemic had not yet emerged, there were some job changes in February 2020 and I returned to my old commission with greater responsibilities as the SAP-Orion Faculty key user. Thus, my SAP-GUI user password was created again and I continue with the commission tasks related to SAP-Orion. Everyone in the SAP-Orion unit under the Corporate Information Management Department is very supportive. We are very busy, especially during recording times, but I still think it's fun.

Is there an unforgettable memory in the Kültür part of your life?

Many memories have been piled up in the past five years. I think the communication we have with the students is one of the enjoyable sides of working at the university. We designed the “Body-Space-Performance Workshop” with -then working in the university- Çisem Soylu in 2019. The workshop we designed was consist of series of workshops lasts for 4 days. During these workshops, we planned panels, interviews, film screenings and performance events.

On the first day of these events, we planned a performance show with Burcu Uçateknik and afterwards the Body-Space workshop, open to student participation. Performance was made at that moment while using the escalator in the Ataköy Campus. First Burcu Uçateknik started the performance by herself. She wanted to perform at the casual usage moment of escalators. During this, there were the usual users of the place and people who had no idea about the event. When the performance started people started to show interest but everyone started watching Burcu. Actually, we had not planned an audience we were expecting an interaction. At this moment, our students involved in the performance and all of a sudden, the users stopped being an audience and performed together. Indeed, the enjoyable side of the performance is that people can communicate with the users around. Even the people who have no idea about the event could participate in the process. However, the interesting thing is, our students realized the situation and, in an instant, they joined the performance. We could never think our students could participate with this much enthusiasm. They had so much fun. Afterwards, other students wanted to attend the “Body-Space” workshop, which is only accessible to students who signed for it. We signed them for the workshop as well and we organized a workshop about understanding the space with motion, with more students than we have planned for, in one of the architectural design studios. I think after this event, we can communicate better with the students. Honestly, it is one of the memories that I cannot forget seeing the happiness in the students’ eyes.

The world is going through a difficult period. How did you spend the pandemic process? What has this process changed in your life?

Pandemic has created vast changes in everyone’s lives. First of all, we have searched for work-life-have fun at-home activities and such. I, also, re-organized my desk, room, home many times. There were some spatial difficulties with transferring your work life to the home. Both lecturing and creating the proper space for continuing academic studies bring different necessities.

At the same time when our entire life started to pass inside the house, I tried to find some alternatives which provide flexible spatial usage. I made great changes to the internal decorations. I am still doing it. Each season, I have created a new order. Along with that, I have noticed the open spaces around the house. The balconies were huge opportunities. In addition to that, I created better communication with my neighbours. Still, I am waiting for the days I can socialize outside the house and around the house. I missed the concerts especially. Meanwhile, I usually listen to concert recordings while I listen to music.

We have been separated from our work environment and colleagues for a long time. What are your thoughts on the new normal?

During pandemics, the days we are at home, I think technology has helped us. Internet and communication technologies have created many opportunities. I think there is no difference between face-to-face meetings and online meetings, I might even prefer online meetings. Online education, whereas, is a complicated topic. I think many courses can be successfully conducted online.

Conducting the exams was a lot more complicated. However, I prefer face-to-face education all the time. Of course, I miss the working environment. Right now, if there was an opportunity for taking a breath at the front or the back yard, it might be better. In the past years, there was work going on in the backyard, which probably is completed by now. The last time we were at the school for the regulation of the backyard, there was a workshop, in the Faculty of Architecture, moderated by Lecturer Suzan Sanlı. I was also involved in that workshop. I am really curious about how the backyard looks now. We were able to see the picture, of course, the communication systems provide a lot of opportunities but experiencing the space is a different feeling and a different experience. Being there and seeing is much more different. This situation also works for our colleagues. We have an environment in the house connecting with online systems, it is possible to reach everyone but I am looking for the days we can communicate face-to-face.

Heeding the Call: A Study of Denise Giardina's Novels
William Jolliff

In Heeding the Call, William Jolliff offers the first book-length discussion of West Virginia writer and activist Denise Giardina, perhaps best known for her novel Storming Heaven, which helped spark renewed interest in the turn-of-the-century Mine Wars. Jolliff proposes that Giardina's fiction be considered under three thematic complexes: regional, political, and theological. Though addressing all three, Heeding the Call foregrounds the theological because it is the least accessible to most readers and critics. In chapters devoted to each of Giardina's novels, Jolliff attends to her uses of history, her formal techniques, and the central themes that make each work significant. What becomes clear is that while the author's religious beliefs inform her fiction, she never offers easy answers. Her narratives consistently push her characters-and her readers into more challenging and meaningful questions. Jolliff concludes by arguing that although Giardina's initial fame has been tied to her significance as an Appalachian novelist, future studies must look beyond the regional to the deeply human questions her novels so persistently engage.
