Towards Trust Building: Reconciliation through a Common Purpose in Cyprus

A research project under the special action “Reconciliation, Confidence Building Measures and Support to Civil Society” in Cyprus.
The project was sponsored by the European Commission and the aim of the project, which was implemented by GPoT Center jointly in collaboration with Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) and Turkish Cypriots Human Rights Foundation (TCHRF), was to examine the humanitarian problems on the island that reflect the difficulty experienced by third parties, i.e. degrading treatment of refugees and asylum seekers; freedom from other cruel, inhuman, degrading treatment or punishment and human trafficking; and also to improve the situation in Cyprus according to the outcomes of the research and put it in line with the European standards.

The project also aspired to develop a common mindset of communication and cooperation between the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots and thus contributed to trust building and reconciliation between the two communities.

The outcome of the project is an extensive report by Christalla Yakithou and Öncel Polili entitled “Reconciliation Through a Common Purpose: Third Party Human Rights in Cyprus”. Güven İnşasına Doğru: Kıbrıs'ta Ortak Bir Amaçla Uzlaşma

 “Uzlaşma, Güven Oluşturma Önlemleri ve Sivil Topluma Destek” projesi Avrupa Komisyonu tarafından desteklenen bir araştırma projesidir.

Türkiye Ekonomik ve Sosyal Etüdler Vakfı (TESEV) ve Kıbrıslı Türk İnsan Hakları Vakfı (TCHRF) ile GPoT Center tarafından ortaklaşa yürütülen projenin amacı, adadaki üçüncü şahısların yaşadığı zorluğu yansıtan insani sorunları incelemek, örneğin mültecilere ve sığınmacılara yönelik insanlık dışı, aşağılayıcı muameleyi ve insan kaçakçılığından korunmaya yönelik tespit etmektedir. Ayrıca araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre Kıbrıs'taki durumu iyileştirme ve Avrupa standartlarına uygun hale getirmeyi hedeflemektedir.

Proje aynı zamanda Kıbrıslı Türkler ve Kıbrıslı Rumlar arasında ortak bir iletişim ve iş birliği anlayışı geliştirmeyi hedeflemiş ve böylece iki toplum arasındaki güveni arttırmaya ve uzlaşmayı sağlamaya katkıda bulunmuştur.

Projenin sonucunda – Christalla Yakhilou ve Öncel Polili tarafından “Reconciliation Through a Common Purpose: Third Party Human Rights in Cyprus adlı kapsamlı bir rapor yayımlanmıştır.
