In the academic year 2016-2017, Istanbul Kültür University has taken significant steps towards becoming one of the pioneering higher education institutions in science, technology and arts. Prof. Dr. Erhan Güzel has been assigned as the rector at İKÜ, which has now 20 years of experience in higher education. The permit to start a Faculty of Health Sciences was obtained from the Council of Higher Education, and within this structure, the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department and the Dietetics Department were opened. Having added the Faculty of Health Sciences into its wide educational range, İKÜ also improved its current departments in accordance with the conditions and the needs of our day; the Construction Technologies program began to be offered within the Vocational School of Technical Sciences. Apart from these developments, important steps were also taken in order to improve the quality of life of the students during their education and beyond, and to increase the worldwide recognition of the institution. The Student Life, Career, Alumni Advisory Unit was established, which will support the students beginning from the first day of their higher education. The International Relations Unit was also launched and it is expected to play an important role in turning İKÜ into an internationally acclaimed university by contributing to academic, social and cultural developments through multi-dimensional cooperation with local and international institutions and sharing of scientific and cultural values. Moreover, the Technological Project Support Unit (TPDB) and the Women and Social Research Unit (İKÜ-KAD) were started in the 2016-2017 academic year.
İstanbul Kültür University has opened up the Construction (English) master’s program within the Institute of Science and Technology. Also, İKÜ has received approval for the establishment of the programs such as Cabin Services in Civil Air Transportation within the Vocational School of Business Administration; International Trade (English) and Entrepreneurship within the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences; Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (English) within the Faculty of Architecture; Cartoons and Animation, Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, and New Media and Communications within the Faculty of Arts and Design. İstanbul Kültür University International Relations and Physics departments have received the 2015-2016 BAGEP Scholarship Award, which supports the research projetcs of young scientists. Architecture and Civil Engineering students who have represented İstanbul Kültür University by attending the PROSteel Steel Construction Design Student Contest have been awarded with the first place. The accreditation period of the departments of Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Civil Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering have been extended according to the MÜDEK’s (Engineering Education Programs Evaluation and Accreditation Association) midterm evaluations.
The student residences, which were improved in physical capacity as well as comfort, have been moved to the new building in Çobançeşme. Also, İstanbul Kültür University has founded the Student Life Unit and the Career and Professional World Relations Unit. Healthcare Management and Fashion Design (evening education) programs were opened up within the Vocational School of Business Management, as well as Opticianry associate’s degree program within the Vocational School of Technical Sciences. İstanbul Kültür University has also begun to admit students for the Cinema and Television Department at the Faculty of Arts and Design. In the academic year of 2014-2015, the name of the Department of Electronic Engineering has been changed to Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering. The doctoral program for the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics within the Institute of Science and Technology has been initialized. İstanbul Kültür University has been ranked first in Turkey with its studies in the ‘‘Biological Psychology’’ field according to the evaluation of TÜBİTAK ULAKBİLİM regarding the number of articles and citations in the scientific journals. Pre-Incubation Center (fİKÜr), which was founded in order to support ideas on innovation and entrepreneurship, has begun its projects.
Having started its Specialized Double Major Program which was designed with the interdisciplinary education approach, with 47 students, İstanbul Kültür University has increased the number of exchange programs to 210 within Erasmus network with 24 European countries. İstanbul Kültür University Faculty of Law has organized Prof. Dr. Turhan Esener Business Law International Conference, whereas the Faculty of Education has organized its first event as a symposium, titled ‘‘Technology in the Digital Age: Education and Humans’’.
Taking over the post from Prof. Dr. Dursun Koçer, Prof. Dr. Sıddıka Semahat Demir has begun to act as the fourth rector of Istanbul Kültür University. As a prerequisite for international integration, the departments of Turkish Language and Literature, Physics and Mathematics-Computing at the Faculty of Science and Letters have received accreditation by FEDEK in the context of national quality assurance and evaluation. Having received the approval from YÖK (Council of Higher Education) to establish Department of Nanotechnology and Material Sciences within the Faculty of Engineering, İstanbul Kültür University has also received ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) and DS certificates which certify the equivalence of credits with the European countries.
Having received approval to open up the faculties of Education and Architecture on its 15th year, İstanbul Kültür University has also opened up Vocational School of Justice. The programs of Ground Services Management in Aviation and Aviation Logistics at the Vocational School of Business Administration, as well as Aircraft Electronics and Pediatric Development programs at the Vocational School of Technical Sciences have begun education. Disabled Students Application and Research Center, Scientific Research Project Unit, and Turkish Teaching Unit have been founded.
Bringing a new dimension to the concept of education with its 100% virtualized information systems and technological infrastructure, İstanbul Kültür University has put into operation CATS (Computer Aided Training and Educational Services) system for remote education and class management within the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences as a pilot study. Having completed its activities on Bologna Process criteria, İstanbul Kültür University also opened up the International Publicity and Foreign Students Unit.
Focusing its attention to social responsibility projects with the studies of Application and Research Centers, İstanbul Kültür University has carried out programs such as ‘‘Anger Management Training for the Drivers’’ in collaboration with İETT (Istanbul Electric Tramway and Tunnel Establishments) and ‘‘Workforce Improvement Vocational Courses’’ in collaboration with İŞKUR (Turkish Employment Agency). İKÜ Research and Development Center, which has been in collaboration with İstanbul Province Directorate of National Education, has begun the YÖNVER project.
Prof. Dr. Dursun Koçer has taken over the rectorate post from Prof. Dr. Tamer Koçel and become İstanbul Kültür University’s third rector. Guidance and Psychological Counselling Application and Research Center, Intellectual Property Rights Application and Research Center, Economics and Finance Application and Research Center, and Geomatics Application and Research Center have been founded. Moreover, İncirlik Campus have been opened. In the academic year 2008-2009, İKÜ’s number of students reached 6,797 and the number of academic personnel reached 569.
Deemed worthy of a government aid for the eight time, İstanbul Kültür University has admitted its first students to the programs of Air Conditioning and Cooling at the Vocational School of Technical Sciences, and to the programs of International Transportation and Logistics, Graphic Design and Advertisement, Foreign Trade and European Union at the Vocational School of Business Administration. Furthermore, Penal Law Application and Research Center has been founded.
On the tenth anniversary of its foundation, İstanbul Kültür University was granted a government aid for the seventh time, as well as opening up the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering within the Faculty of Science and Letters. Also, Akıngüç Auditorium and Arts Center with its capacity of 750 people have been opened to host art and culture activities. Molecular Biology and Genetics and Psychology departments have admitted their first students. İKÜ’s number of students reached 6,903 and the number of graduates reached 3,677.
Granted a government aid for the sixth time, İstanbul Kültür University has opened the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Science and Letters. Also, Continuous Education Application and Research Center (İKÜSEM), Foreign Politics Platform, Small and Medium Sized Businesses Counselling Unit, and Brain Dynamics and Complex Systems Application and Research Center have been founded. İKÜ’s number of students reached 6,476, the number of graduates reached 2,773, and the number of academic personnel reached 554 this year.
Prof. Dr. Tamer Koçel has begun to act as the second rector of Istanbul Kültür University. Granted a government aid for the fifth time, İstanbul Kültür University has opened up a Mathematics doctoral program at the Institute of Sciences.
İstanbul Kültür University was granted a government aid for the fourth time. The departments of Physics at the Faculty of Science and Letters and Electronic Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture have admitted their first students. The Family-owned Businesses and Entrepreneurship Application and Research Center has been founded. The student residences for girls have opened at the Şirinevler Campus. Also, the faculties of Engineering and Architecture and Arts and Design have moved there.
Following the evaluations, İstanbul Kültür University was deemed worthy of a government aid for the third time. İKÜ has become the first foundation university to open up doctoral programs for Law at the Institute of Social Sciences and for Civil Engineering at the Institute of Sciences.
İstanbul Kültür University was deemed worthy of another government aid with its number of full time instructors, the substantiality of its Instructor Training Program, quality of education, broad scholarship opportunities and scientific publications. Departments such as Communication Design, Communication Arts, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at the Faculty of Arts and Design have admitted their first students. The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences have been moved to the new building at the Şirinevler Campus. At the Vocational Schools, the programs of Accounting, Banking and Insurance, Radio and Television Broadcasting, Computer Hardware and Electronic Trade have been introduced.
The students have graduated from the faculties of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, and Science and Letters for the first time. İstanbul Kültür University have been granted a government aid also for the first time. Faculty of Arts and Design and the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at the Faculty of Science and Letters have admitted their first students. Within İstanbul Kültür University, Atatürk’s Reforms and Revolution Historical Research and Application Center and Fine Arts Research and Application Center have been opened up and begun their projects.
The students have graduated from the Vocational Schools for the first time this year. Also, Faculty of Law, Institute of Social Sciences, and Institute of Science and Technology have admitted their first students. New programs and departments have opened such as English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Tourist Guiding as well as Public Relations and Advertising programs at the Vocational School. İKÜ’s number of students reached 1210 and the number of academic personnel reached 154 this year.
In the academic year 1998-1999, new departments begin to provide education such as the Department of International Relations at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, departments of Architecture and Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, and the programs of Tourism Management and Industrial Electronics at the Vocational School. İKÜ’s number of students reached 585 and the number of academic personnel reached 90 this year.
İstanbul Kültür University was founded by the rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Önder Öztunalı as a foundation university with a public legal entity. In its first academic year, İstanbul Kültür University began education with 157 students and an academic staff of 32 people with the programs at the Faculty of Science and Letters (Department of Mathematics-Computing), Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (Department of Business Administration), Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (Departments of Civil Engineering and Computer Engineering), and Vocational Schools (Business Administration and Computer Programming).
