Program Objectives

The mission of the Department of Civil Engineering at Istanbul Kultur University is to provide students with knowledge and skills needed to perform civil engineering practice with a sense of responsibility that satisfies the needs of the profession and the community. The civil engineering department with its strong academic staff and developing facilities is determined to achieve this mission through program objectives listed below.

An IKU Department of Civil Engineering graduate should:
Possess a broad knowledge of the principles and fundamentals of civil engineering and their application, and hence be able to practice civil engineering professionally, Possess the skills required to achieve success in the multidisciplinary environment of the 21st century, such that they will readily be able to adapt to emerging and evolving technologies, social conditions, professional standards, and career opportunities, Possess an understanding and appreciation of ethical, societal and professional issues in civil engineering, Possess an appreciation for their continuing professional development in the competent environment
Both undergraduate and graduate programs within the department have been organized in line with the above stated objectives. The teaching philosophy of the programs focus on project based learning. The curriculum covers the key components of today's civil engineering profession. 

The ultimate goal is undoubtedly to educate prospective civil engineers who would have an ambition and excitement to build a better world!





Establishment

TC İstanbul Kültür University was founded in July 15, 1997 in accordance with the article number 4281 of the legislation. The Department of Civil Engineering began to offer classes during the 1997-1998 academic year with Prof. Dr. Okay Eroskay as the founding dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. The department of  İKU Civil Engineering which began to operate in the main building of the Şirinevler Campus, has moved to its current location in Atakoy Campus in 2004. 





Qualification Awarded

The requirement for the Bachelor of Science Degree in the field of Civil Engineering is the successful completion of the formal coursework of minimum of 240 ECTS. Students enrolled in the program are also expected to complete a total of 40 workdays of  training during the summer breaks.





Language of Instruction

İstanbul Kültür University Civil Engineering Department courses are conducted in English. Students must have a minimum standard TOEFL score of 75 or IELTS score of 6, or should receive a minimum score of 80 in the Inter-University Foreign Language Examination (ÜDS or KPDS) or its equivalent in a foreign language test accepted by the Inter-University Board. Students who are not able to pass the English proficiency exam are required to complete one year preparation class in English.

Admission and Registration Requirements

İstanbul Kültür University Civil Engineering Program admits a pre-set number of students every year based on the results of the Central Placement Examination administered by OSYM. In this Central Placement process, the candidates are placed in the Civil Engineering Department by OSYM on the basis of their LYS (Undergraduate Placement Examination) scores, their own preferences about higher education programs and the requirements and quota of these programs.

In addition, foreign students are also admitted to the two year programs and the undergraduate programs of Istanbul Kültür University as indicated in the guidelines of the application and admission for foreign students. Registrations of the students that are placed in the Civil Engineering Department are carried out by Istanbul Kültür University Student Affairs Office according to the calendar set by OSYM.

Double Major–Minor Programs

The successful civil engineering students in İKU can apply for double major in every department. Students go through a competitive selection procedure for double major programs. For those who fulfilled the requirements of both programs are given two seperate diplomas.





Internship

It is required for each student to complete an internship for minimum of 40 workdays in addition to completion of required ECTS credits. The time of this training should be outside the academic period (fall and spring semesters) and must be approved by the Faculty Administration Council. The training which begins after the fourth semester should be conducted in accordance with the students’ field of study and be compatible with their engineering formation.

Student who got one of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C grades as success grade, shall be considered as being succeeded that course. Student who got one of C-, D+, D, D- grades for a course, shall be considered as being succeeded that course conditionally. In the event that student must repeat the semester in which he got these grades, student shall be considered as being failed these courses. Student who got FD and FF grades for any course shall be considered as failed that course. Student who attended but not succeeded the course is granted FD grade; student who didn’t fulfill the attendance condition is granted FF grade. Procedures and principles applicable to enrollment, education and examinations carried out at the level of bachelor’s degree and associate degree have been determined by Regulations of Istanbul KulturUniversity Associate Degree and Bachelor’s Degree Education.







Graduation Requirements

The student must successfully complete all courses (equivalent of a total 240 ECTS) that take place in the four-year education plan. In order to complete all the courses in the program successfully, the student must have at least 2.00 on a 4.00 weighted grade point average. In addition, each student must have completed 40 days compulsory internship.





International Cooperations

ERASMUS is a European Union based program established to promote collaboration among the higher education institutions of European countries. It provides grants for joint projects and short term student and academic staff exchange programmes.  Students have the opportunity to study at a European Union institution and receive financial support during the academic exchange period (one or two terms/ 3 to 12 months). Students of the Civil Engineering department may qualify to be an Erasmus student in one of the following partner universities:

Occupational Profiles Of Graduates


Civil engineers can work for public or private companies in the design process or in the construction site; or work as a free-lance consultant or do consultancy for construction companies. They can go for governmental agencies including State Railways, State Highways, State Hydraulic Works, and the Ministry of Public Works.





Access to Further Studies

Upon the successful completion of the undergraduate program, candidates having acceptable scores in ALES exam and proficiency in English can go on to graduate programs.





Departmental Facilities

İKU Civil engineering department has 5 professors, 1 associate professor, 5 assistant professors, 3 research assistants, 8 engineers and 4 technicians. The department facilities include structure laboratory, construction materials laboratory, geotechnical laboratory, materials laboratory, chemistry laboratory, and computer laboratories.
