Molecular Biology and Genetics focuses on the diversity of biological characteristics, their evolutionary relationships and investigates molecular patterns and (epi)genetic targets.
Investigation of molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology approaches has gained tremendous importance in developed countries. Research and Development (R&D) opportunities which are the first goal of this discipline are supported by significant funds. These facilities combine both classical molecular genetics and multidisciplinary studies including stem cells, tissue engineering, genetic engineering and recombinant DNA technology expertise. Furthermore, recombinant vaccines and therapeutic tools, development of early diagnosis or treatment strategies for genetic diseases, developing transgenic biological models with desired features through gene transfers are prominent applications with high product potential.
Mission and Goal
Our Molecular Biology and Genetics Department which is established in Faculty of Science and Letters has a mission to teach primary concepts of molecular biology and genetics and to provide broad knowledge in Molecular Biology and Genetics to our students. In order to promote the education of qualified specialist, who is endowed by theoretical knowledge and practical capabilities on various sub-branches of molecular biology and genetics, we improve the quality of education through enlarging the number of elective courses, which accredited by FEDEK for 5 years since 2013.
• To offer the best possible academic achievement and practical training in molecular and genetic aspects of life sciences
• To encourage and provide increasing opportunities for undergraduate students to actively participate in faculty-members mentored research projects or their own project leadership supported by university scientific grants or TUBITAK.
• To carry out R&D studies especially on the fields of cancer molecular biology and plant biotechnology.
Admissions to the undergraduate, master, and doctorate degree programs are accepted by Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. Research opportunities exist in a variety of areas including molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, plant biochemistry and genetics, cancer biology, immunology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, and developmental biology. The diverse areas of research are not conducted independently; there is a great synergy between closely and distantly related areas in order to open new research and study opportunities.
In order to encourage and provide increasing opportunities for undergraduate students to actively participate in faculty-members mentored research projects or their own project leadership supported by university scientific grants or TUBITAK. Our department also provides undergraduate students internship opportunities in our laboratories during summer period and participating on-going projects.
Besides the undergraduate program, our department provides Master Degrees to carry out R&D studies especially on the fields of cancer molecular biology and plant biotechnology.
Graduates of the field may continue their career after bachelor degree at graduate programs in domestic or foreign universities, institutes or research centers. They can also work in R&D (research and development) and quality control departments of companies operating in the sectors of medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, cosmetics, agriculture, food and biotechnology as well as hospitals, private laboratories and in vitro fertilization (test tube baby) centers. Another opportunity is international companies dealing with the design and production of equipments used in the field of molecular biology and genetics or medicine.
Molecular Biology and Genetics Club facilities
Our undergraduate students take part active roles in Molecular Biology and Genetics Club of our department. Important scientists are welcomed to give knowledge about their working areas. In addition, watching scientific films and documentaries, organizing scientific tours, attending courses and seminars at other universities are other main activities of our MBG club.
Most of alumni of our department continue their academic careers in outstanding Turkey and Europe universities at a graduate level. Addition to academic career our alumni take part in distinguished laboratories, hospitals, industrial companies in Turkey.
