How are students registered?

The registration of students’ who became entitled to register to any educational programmes at İstanbul Kültür University is done by the Registrar’s Office. Registration dates and the documents required are announced by OSYM and the Board of Higher Education.

The students have to reregister at the beginning of each semester within the prescribed time in the academic calendar. During mid-term registrations, the courses that the student is going to select are idendified and the student is registered. For the mid-term registrations, the mid-term tuition fee has to be paid in advance. The students whose excuses were approved by the rectorate can register within the course selection period.
Reregistration is done by the student on the Internet with the user name and the password given and approved by the advisor.

What is Student Information Network (NOKTA)? What can I do to get a password?

Student Information Network (NOKTA) is a system that enables the students to reregister to the courses, learn the exam results and receive the messages sent to them. Your student information network password will be given after the registration.

What are Compulsory Courses, Elective Courses and Prerequisite Courses?

Compulsory Course: Among the common compulsory courses mentioned in the Article 5 of Higher Education Act No. 2547, Atatürk’s Principles and Revolution History, the Turkish language and fine arts courses as non-compulsory courses are included in the curriculum in the first four semesters. All of these courses are to be planned and implemented for a minimum of two semesters.
Elective Courses are the courses that are identified separately or as a group in every schedule complementing the formation about the profession and that are about general knowledge and different interests.

Prerequisite Courses: The course which should be accomplished in order to take another course is called the prerequisite course. Prerequisite courses are suggested by the head of the department to the related board of faculty and they are finalized after the approval of the board.

What are Add-drop and Withdrawal?

Within the preserible time in the academic calendar reserving the restrictions on course load,
students may drop some of the courses that they elected during the midterm registration period with their own will, their academic counsellor’s recommendation and the approval of the head of the department or/and elect new courses
Adding and dropping is done within the first four weeks of the beginning of the term at the latest. From the beginning of the term to the last four weeks at the latest, the student may drop at most one course in each term with his counsellor’s recommendation and the approval of the related academician and head of the department.

What is Term Grade Point Average?

Midterm Grade Point Average: The grade point average calculated using the students’ final grades within the term they have studied.

What is Grade Point Average?

Grade point average is calculated using all the final grades of the courses students have taken in their registered program.

What should be my grade point average to pass my class?

In the calculation of grade point averages, the grades from A to F are taken into account. The grades Y,Z,T,P,G,E and V are not taken into account. ( For grade illustration see also: What are the equivalents of grades in the lettered system?) In repeated courses, the highest grade is taken into account. At the end of any term, the students whose grade point averages are 2.00 and higher are considered as successful.

Under what conditions do I have to repeat the term?

At the end of an academic year, if the students whose grade point averages are lower than 2.00 have at the same time an average lower than 2.00 in two terms in a row, they have to repeat the term. These students have to repeat the courses in which they have a C grade. They can not drop these courses and they can not withdraw from these courses. For these students provisions related to the least course load are applied. The course load the students can take in one term is the course load in the timetable of the repeated term at most. If the students who have repeated a term, have a midterm Grand point average or Grand point average of 2.00 or higher, they are considered as successful. Term repetition is determined at the beginning of each term by considering the students’ grade point averages at the end of summer school.

What are the conditions for being a high honour student?

Students whose grade point averages are 3.00-3.49 are considered as honour students and those whose Grand point averages are higher than 3.50 are considered as high honour students.

Who is a Probational Student?

The students whose grade point averages are lower than 2.00 at the end of an academic year are considered as probational students. These students are not given so much course load. However, the students who are in their last two terms of an associate degree or undergraduate program can be given more course load with the recommendation of the head of the department and the decision of board of directors of the faculty or vocational school.

I would like to increase my grades. Am I allowed to retake the courses I have taken before to increase my grades?

In order to increase your grade point average, you can repeat the courses in which you got a C-, D+, D and D- grade before. In repeated courses, the highest grade is valid. Grade point average and midterm grade point average are calculated considering the highest grades in the repeated courses.

Where can I learn my grades?

Final grades are handed in at the end of each term by the related department by the date mentioned in the academic calendar to the related deanery or college directorate. Related deanery or college directorate declares the results to the registrar’s office. Final grades are declared by the registrar’s office. At the end of each term, registrar’s office prepares a transcript of recor

How can I object to my exam grade?

In the event of factual errors in the grades, the student who wants to be identified whether there is an assessment error or not can apply in written to the Registrar’s Office   at the latest within  5 days of the announcement of the grades. Applications are processed by the department chair at the latest within two weeks. The decision is informed to the student   and Registrar’s Office through the office of the dean.

What is summer school?

Summer school is an education and training program which is taken in the summer term in a shorter than  in the fall and spring semesters. The students who failed the lessons or couldn’t take lessons because of lack of time or who want to raise their grade averages or catch up their lacking lessons to graduate in prescribed period can take summer courses.

What is student certificate? How can I get it?

Student certificate is a document showing that the students registered and take advantages of student rights of our university are students in our university.
To get a student certificate students can apply for it by filling out the “ Student Certificate Application Form”. If  any explanation is desired to  the certificate, it is indicated on the “ Student Certificate Application Form”.

  1. It can obtained  by submitting personally to Registrar’s Office.
  2. Applications by faxing are accepted in compulsory situations.
  3. The document prepared after students’ personal application is not delivered to anyone except themselves. In particular situations ,student certificate is delivered to people who are indicated in the application form  by the student  provided showing ID ( by taking a photocopy)
 What is Transcript? How can I get it?

It is a document which states students’ grades of every term. It can be obtained by Registrar’s Office.

What are the prerequisites of internal transfer?

The students can apply for internal transferring in Istanbul Kültür University or from other universities provided required conditions. In Istanbul Kültür University only between  same departments of faculty can be transferred. The applications made by outside of IKU are processed by a committee  formed for this purpose. If the students who want to transfer is from Turkey , they  must  have successfully  completed at least one full year of current university department( except Foreign Language preparatory  ). If the students come from foreign universities (included Cyprus universities), they must have successfully completed at least two years. The applications suitable for conditions which are examined  by the Transfer committee  are sent to the respective  faculty and   they decide which ones of the lessons taken by the students will be transferred.

What GPA is needed to graduate from the university?

Provided that you have successfully completed  all of the requirements of your undergraduate or associate degree program (training, project, practice…etc); when you have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher , you can be eligible  for graduation.

Is IKU diploma valid abroad?

The students who have successfully completed our associate degree, undergraduate and graduate programs are given a supplement diploma which is valid in EU countries besides our university diploma. In this diploma which is written in English, the lessons and credits taken by the students are indicated.

What are the prerequisites of external upwards transfer?

After the external upwards transfer exam result, the students who have rights to register for a department of Istanbul Kültür University must complete a “Preparatory Program for Graduate Study” which lasts at most three years.  From the fifth semester, the students who are successful in this program start to study the department they transferred. In addition, if their department has English Preparatory Program, they have to complete its requirements. If there is an exemption request by these students, respective Faculty Directory decides which ones of the lessons taken by the students can be considered as successful and makes students’ register.

Do I have a chance transferring from a state university to a foundation university?

Internal transfer is possible. You can check the regulations of internal transfer rules between high education institutions in associate degree and undergraduate level. www.yok.gov.tr

What does being on leave mean? What are the requirements?

Students may wish to pause their studies due to inevitable, valid reasons by applying to their Faculties’ Deans Offices or School Director. These students may be granted permission to leave the university temporarily after the decision of Executive Board. Leave may not exceed two semesters at a time, or a total of four semesters for a student’s entire study period. Periods which elapses during the course of such leave are not counted as part of the study period. However, in this period students cannot take exams and if they take exams, these grades are considered as invalid. Except inevitable reasons, applications for leave should be submitted with documents supporting and explaining their excuses until the last day of the taking courses. To be on leave, the student should pay  their tuition fee and  register. Then this tuition fee is applied to semester they return to their study.

Who is an Academic Advisor?

All students in Istanbul Kültür University have an academic advisor.  Academic advisor is assigned by Dean or School Director to guide students about their education and other problems. Your academic advisor is assigned from your freshman year onwards  and for all academic matters you can consult to this professor. Besides this, for all online registration process academic advisor’s approval is required.

What is “visiting student” or “ special student” status?

Visiting students and special students are the students who are given permission to participate in the lessons by University Executive Board to develop their knowledge and skills. Diploma and title are not given to these students. However, the students who are allowed to attend the school can take the exams in the lessons, laboratories or participate in the practices to identify their success. The students are given a document showing their academic standing at the end of the exam.
