Program Objectives

IKU, The Department of English Language and Literature offers an in-depth study of literary and cultural traditions in English and teaches analytic, critical and communication skills, with a particular focus on written and spoken academic English.  Emphasizing the linguistic features of literary and cultural texts, as well as the historical and culture-specific aspects of language, its curriculum brings together literary, linguistic and cultural studies to offer fresh ways of reading a large variety of classical and contemporary texts. Students also engage with the broader social, historical and cultural contexts from which these texts emerge, developing an understanding of the role of language and culture in their production, dissemination and consumption.

The degree in English prepares students for further academic study as well as careers in secondary and higher education. As critical thinkers, insightful interpreters of all kinds of texts, and effective communicators in both oral and written English, the graduates of the department go on to pursue careers in many different fields, including media and communications and business.
